What is bèi?

I have heard this word "bèi" before in videos and it seems to mean "blame" or "due to" but I cannot find it in online dictionaries.

There is also the word JIAN which I hear frequently. It seems to mean LIKE THIS.

What are are the characters for these? Thanks ahead.

被 (bèi) is a passive marker. It can be translated with passive tense + "by"

他被哥哥打了一顿 = he was beaten by his older brother

这样 (zhèyàng or zhèiyàng) = like this

The above is assuming that you provided the correct pinyin, not a rough English transliteration. If it's a transliteration, then maybe for "jian" you want 這樣?

被 and 这样 must be the words I was looking for.

I thought 被 meant blame because everytime I hear it, something unfortunate or nasty had happened. A typical example is 一杯水被他打翻。

And I often hear it with the noun or pronoun missing: 一杯水被打翻了。

Probably 这样 spoken quickly sounds like JIAN, which was why I was searching for JIAN.

Yes, bèi is usually used in the so-called "adversative passive" construction, so the action has a negative effect on the subject usually.

It often sounds almost exactly like "jiang".
