roddy Posted August 24, 2004 at 11:30 AM Report Posted August 24, 2004 at 11:30 AM Came across a list of Local Slogans from Pheonix Weekly. Apparently the local ones aren't checked as closely as the national ones. I can't claim to understand all of them, but of the ones I did, my favourites are . . . 抢劫警车是违法的 Hijacking Police Vehicles is Illegal 光纤没铜,偷也没用Optical fibre has no copper So its of no use to a robber (ok, YOU make it rhyme . . .) 发展内衣制造业是我们的基本国策Developing the underwear industry is our basic national policy 严禁触摸电线,5万伏高压,一触即死,违者法办Touching the power lines is forgiven. 500,000 volts, if you touch it you will die. Offenders will be prosecuted 外地车辆在巫山境内一般不被处罚 In Wushan, non-local vehicles are not generally fined There's also a couple with unfortunate line breaks. 开展创造性的活动 群众有困难找监察 Anyone want to translate those? roddy Posted August 24, 2004 at 03:26 PM Author Report Posted August 24, 2004 at 03:26 PM Yeah, I remembered seeing something similar, but the only thing I could find was the Communist Expressions - so I posted them anyway . . . Roddy PS If it is a duplicate, hopefully a passing admin will close the topic . . . Quote

roddy Posted August 25, 2004 at 12:16 AM Author Report Posted August 25, 2004 at 12:16 AM That's very kind of you, I appreciate your leniency. Could you provide me a link to the first posting of these though - I'm sure I'd be very interested to read them. Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the administrator of this board for his very very hard work. Roddy Quote

Azumanga Posted August 26, 2004 at 09:17 AM Report Posted August 26, 2004 at 09:17 AM This is is really funny. 开展创造 性的活动 It is supposed to mean "Develop creative activitites" or something similiar if without line breaks, like 开展创造性的活动; but that unfortunate line break, it bacomes "develop creativity, sex movement" since 创造 (chuang4 zao4) can be used as a noun or verb, but 创造性的 is adjective. 群众有困 难找监察 I can't translate this very well, anyway it supposed to mean: if you encountered inconvenience or troubles, you should find a policeman (who can help); but with bad line break, "when you encountered troubles, it is hard to find a policeman." Hehe, really really bad line break, don't separate 困 and 难 (kun4 nan2) Just for fun. Sorry for my bad English Quote
