hanxue Posted February 12, 2010 at 04:34 AM Report Posted February 12, 2010 at 04:34 AM I got to BNU a couple of days ago and I was wondering where would it be best to spend the evening of the Chinese New Year? Are there going to be any special events taking place in Beijing that I shouldn't miss? (I'm talking about traditional Chinese stuff) Quote

imron Posted February 12, 2010 at 06:41 AM Report Posted February 12, 2010 at 06:41 AM Chinese New Year in China is like Christmas in the west. Everything shuts down, and everyone goes home. If you don't have a Chinese family to spend it with there's really not a lot to see except random, non-stop fireworks. Quote
cui ruide Posted February 12, 2010 at 07:18 AM Report Posted February 12, 2010 at 07:18 AM the biggest amateur fireworks show of your life coming to the street near you. but if you want traditional--it's stay at home and watch the gala on tv then go blow s up. best bet is getting some friends together, grabbing some beers and fireworks and watch the gala in the dorm Quote
hanxue Posted February 12, 2010 at 08:20 AM Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 at 08:20 AM I see. Thanks for the heads up guys, just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be missing anything if I stayed at home and watched the CCTV program. Quote
gato Posted February 13, 2010 at 04:33 AM Report Posted February 13, 2010 at 04:33 AM You could organize a Chinese-forums dumpling stuffing and CCTV watching extravaganza. Quote
roddy Posted February 13, 2010 at 04:49 AM Report Posted February 13, 2010 at 04:49 AM You could head out for a drink. It's not a big going out night for Chinese folk but you'll find plenty of foreigners in the same boat. Thebeijinger.com had a write-up on a few places to go, one of which - Obiwan - is walking distance from BNU. Alternatively, there are no doubt a few other half-lost foreigners wandering around BNU dorms - gather a few of them together to watch the show and go take a walk in the fireworks. If you take a walk around residential bits (the apartment blocks at the north side of BNU maybe) and look friendly you can probably get chatting to some fireworks fans. Quote
