jobin Posted February 18, 2010 at 05:05 AM Report Posted February 18, 2010 at 05:05 AM of getting caught and disciplined for tutoring english without a work permit? Don't tell me about the consequences, i know those and they might not be so nice. But if i quietly put of a few small notices in a giant estate to offer my services, take on a few students to earn a few bucks, would anyone know what i was doing? Do the locals really care, would someone 'rat' on me to the police, etc? Not easy to get the work permit here but here is better than some other places so would like to stay. Need some work and money. Any ideas on this? Quote
sebhk Posted February 18, 2010 at 05:25 AM Report Posted February 18, 2010 at 05:25 AM I'd say chances of getting caught are little to none. I did it for 3 years while being in HK on a student visa. But I never advertised openly. Quote
jobin Posted February 18, 2010 at 12:51 PM Author Report Posted February 18, 2010 at 12:51 PM Well, that's great SEBHK. But what does 'openly' mean to you? Slide notices under doors at night? Whisper to known friends in taverns? Approach kids waiting for the bus? Sure, if i had a number of local contacts who could invite me and many young friends into a house, then problems over. Currently i know few school aged kids. Please, how did you find the students? Or how did they find you? Thanks. Quote
yonitabonita Posted February 18, 2010 at 02:27 PM Report Posted February 18, 2010 at 02:27 PM Hi I tutored English in HK on a student visa and never got caught. A bunch of exchange students at HKU did the same and I never heard of anyone getting caught. I found my students by pinning up a notice at a Park 'n Shop and Wellcome - I think most local supermarkets have noticeboards. I just gave an email address. Hope this helps Y Quote
sebhk Posted February 18, 2010 at 02:32 PM Report Posted February 18, 2010 at 02:32 PM The parents of the students mostly found me. The security guard of the building where I lived told me that some people had asked him where the "gweilo" in the building comes from and if I was available to teach English. So I started teaching some kids living in my building and later found more students through referral. I am not an English native speaker though, but most of the parents did not care. Quote
