@Kemian 1) Introduce yourself. 2)my Chinese learning background (where have you studied, for how long, 3)any previous experiences of having been to China 3) my motivation for undertaking the MTCSOL 4) future plans after I complete this program. They praised my kouyu and that was it. Hope Hanban won't reject me in the end.

@LinZhenPu, I thank you very much. You have been tremendous help. Where have you applied?

Just submitted my application last night and I have applied with 哈尔滨工程大学 as my first choice and 吉林外国语学校  as my second choice. Being that it's getting harder to get a scholarship as you've pointed out, I have opted to apply for the 6 month scholarship as it is supposed to be less competitive than the 1 year scholarship, and I have chosen the 汉语国际教育 category.

Note to others that to apply to the 汉语国际教育 category you must satisfy any of the following conditions:

1)来华进修的在职汉语教师;

2)预备攻读汉语国际教育本科的孔子学院(课堂)注册学员;

3)汉语言专业学生

I belong to the 3rd condition.

My recommending institute is 格里菲斯大学旅游孔子学院 who were very happy to recommend me and issued me a recommendation letter from their professor within just 3 days. I think they need to upload their signature to the application form even though it is on the recommendation letter but I'm waiting to hear back on that.

@LinZhenPu, I think you should write them e-mail, that you need them to forward your application as soon as possible. They don't check scholarship website everyday like we do :), so they may not know that you have already submitted apllication.

@igacave Actually I sent them an email straight after I submitted the application last night. I got an email back from one of the teachers this morning (at 4.30am!!). I've also been keeping all email correspondence with them in Chinese which I think has really helped to speed things along.

@LinZhenPu, sure thing, using Chinese really helps. I would also keep in touch with your Uni. They may do a lot about your application.

@igacave Yes, of course. In fact I have that particular teacher's wechat and I met her face to face when I was in Harbin last year. I think it's a very good idea for anyone wanting to apply for a Confucius Institute Scholarship to track down a teacher who is involved with scholarship program students of the university you want to apply to and get their direct contact. I would not have otherwise known that they had changed their program type from 汉语语言文学 to 汉语国际教育。

@LinZhenPu, very good point. They can accept you as soon as your local CI recommends you.

I think all these procedures seem vague, not clear. It is not like in my country... That's China :D

@igacave I like to think of it that the people who show the most persistence in following all of the procedures to a T to their best abilities along with having all of the requisite qualifications are the most worthy scholarship recipients. Those who expect things to be done for them need not apply.

2)High HSK and HSKK results don't guarantee anything these days.

Sometimes it is just luck. But I would choose Uni that is not very famous, preferably associated with your local CI.

I was almost denied because my score was too high. If your HSK score is high enough for the masters programs, be careful. If you are taking the HSK just for the scholarship, do the HSK 4 and get a high score. An HSK 5 means you're better fitted for the masters program.

The school admitted me but Hanban rejected my application to the program on this basis. I've had to switch schools and programs to continue doing a one year program. Big hastle.

Also, apparently, in contrast with previous years, now Hanban has final say on all applications. Previously, the school got final say.

@艾墨本

I actually remember few stories like that... I think that if we meet the reqirements, we should be okay.

For instance: for full MTCSOL is 210 HSK and at least passing HSKK. I think if you try with high scores, and your Uni accepts you, you will be granted a scholarship.I don't know Hanban's policy on rejecting people like that, and I do not remeber such cases on this forum.

But for one year they require HSK3, if you try with high scores, then, in theory you should win. If you try to obtain one year scholarship with HSK4, you may not be granted with one year, but only one semester. Even if your uni decided to admit you, Hanban may only give you half year scholarship (my friend had this situation).

I know this procedures are not written on Hanban's webpage, or any CI webpage. I just gathered it from personal experiance and other people on this forum.

This great to have a place like this and share :)

I thought the same. I was rejected by hanban and told to sign up for a different program (which my first school, beishida) didn't offer. The reason sited was that my score is too high.

Can you please tell me your scores and what scholarship have you applied in private message?

@igacave and @艾墨本 - the minimum HSK3 score required for CIS is 270 this year. What do you mean the score could be "too high"? Do you mean that if you get 300/300 on HSK3 you might be less likely to get it than if you get 270/300?

@Jellyfish, I mean applying with wrong HSK - they require HSK 3, you apply with HSK 4 or HSK 5. I am also not clear about "score too high"

i got 76 on my HSKK middle level, can this be consider too high for master program? That's why I asked  @艾墨本 about his scores in private...

I'm fine sharing publicly and have already done so on these forums here. I got a 274 on the HSK 5 and was applying for the 1 year language program. I was told I should apply directly to the masters program because I already meet the minimum requirement. The problem was that the minimum requirements for Beishida is an HSK 6 score. Either way, I'm not ready to dive into a masters yet. I'm just finished a two year contract that has been quite intense and need something lighter, first.

EDIT:

As long as you are below an HSK 5 210, you should be fine.

 @艾墨本, first - wow, that's impressive. Congrats!

Second - meeting the reqirements seems crucial.

If I gather correctly: you can apply with on one year program with hsk 3, 300/300, but not with HSK 5 , score 181/300 or any higher HSK for that matter.
