Badger Posted June 20, 2017 at 07:55 PM Report Posted June 20, 2017 at 07:55 PM I'm glad I just found this forum/thread. I felt before "alone" in this process (this extremely frustrating process, at least for me). I am nervous about the "Chinese Major" thing, as I was not a Chinese undergrad in college. I am on the 4th of 5 steps on the application, meaning the university has accepted me and has forwarded it to hanban. I am just waiting for them now. I have applied for tcsol 1 academic year. I am very nervous about this all too, as this will decide what I am doing for the next year in my life. I have no idea when they are going to get back to me...that's the hard part, this wait game. Best of luck to all.

Popular Post Jellyfish Posted June 21, 2017 at 07:10 AM Popular Post Report Posted June 21, 2017 at 07:10 AM 19 hours ago, 艾墨本 said: Get a job. I have a few friends that could help me get a job quite easily, but I really want to continue working toward teaching Chinese so this would just be a tangent that would feel like I'm wasting time just to earn money. Hey again, I hope you're feeling better today after a good chat with family and friends. Sometimes it's amazing what people who aren't in your situation can come up with, and often it just takes an outsider's perspective to make things look a lot less grim than they did initially. I was going to send you this as a private message but then realised that this situation will probably hit more than one of us and as a consequence, my thoughts on "Plan B/D/E/F" might be useful for others down the line too, so I'll just post it here. It's great that you have friends who can help you find a job, and I'm in a very similar situation to yours - if I don't get this, then I'll have to consider several considerably less desirable alternatives, one of which is, you guessed it, friends helping me get a job in China. It's all about trying to play smart with whatever hand you're dealt though, and since my application hasn't been the most smooth riding, and at one point looked like it might get rejected, I've had plenty of time to consider the benefits of this. So let me share what I came up with - and if you don't want to think about China for a few days, or if you need to come up with our own plan, that's cool too You didn't mention what the job your friends could help you get might be, though I'm going to take a wild guess and say it's probably teaching. I've also been offered (informally) a teaching position at a university. You said you want to be immersed in academic Chinese, since your spoken Mandarin is already quite good. If you were to teach at university, you'd have access to pretty much all the resources you need! From my experience, most lecturers are very open to students (and hopefully also colleagues) auditing or sitting in on lessons without officially taking the course or participating in activities. This might be very different in China, and might not even be a suitable thing to do for a language course, but basically, that's my game plan: if I'm going to China to teach, I'd try to approach other teachers or lecturers to ask if I could sit in on any classes that don't clash with my own timetable, if necessary for a small fee or what have you. As I said, university is the perfect environment for that. Same applies for a language school though: if they teach more than just English, you could ask to take Chinese classes at your own institute either for free or at a discount. Maybe I'm completely off in thinking you'd go into teaching, and maybe none of these prospects and options are as comforting to you as they are to me, but I just thought I'd share my thoughts on working in China and improving your Chinese at the same time. As I said, if this is too soon/not helpful, feel free to ignore this post and just take a wee break from it all Edited to add: Maybe not my place to say this, but to everyone asking 艾墨本 questions about his application: It's not particularly helpful to his current situation and won't help you with your own application this year. Everything's been done, dusted and submitted and now all we can do is wait. Knowing how your own application differed from his won't change your result at this point. Maybe when it's all over and all of us have results we can do a round up of what did/didn't work in our favour but for now, maybe just leave people who had bad news from Hanban work on their Plan B (or F, as the case may be) in peace yeah? 6
艾墨本 Posted June 21, 2017 at 10:46 AM Report Posted June 21, 2017 at 10:46 AM First of all, thank you to Jellyfish for the kindly worded message. It goes a long way. I have actually been teaching English in China for the last two years and I'd like to do something different. I feel a lot better today and am just pulling on every string and seeing what is at the end of each one. Nothing to report yet. I hope I'll get to say congratulations to many of you over the next few weeks. 3
New Members yahya Posted June 21, 2017 at 06:06 PM New Members Report Posted June 21, 2017 at 06:06 PM 你好, I am preadmitted by 北京外国语大学- BFSU and waiting for the hanban result. Do you have idea till when would we get the result 1
New Members shmeli31 Posted June 22, 2017 at 04:03 PM New Members Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 04:03 PM So I applied for the one-year program under a Chinese language major through the CI at the University of Minnesota. I submitted my application May 10th, however, for whatever dumb reason, the CI did not advance me to the next step until June 20th even after I urged them to many times. I was denied because all the spots were filled. I am very disappointed and somewhat furious with my CI because they ruined my chances. My guess is that most of you waiting have gotten the scholarship but Hanban is just making you wait.
地球人 Posted June 22, 2017 at 04:33 PM Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 04:33 PM @yahya, anytime from now to July 15th. I'm waiting for Hanban's response, too. I think everyone still is. 1
Badger Posted June 22, 2017 at 05:32 PM Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 05:32 PM @foreigner2u is the TSCOL Program really only for students who majored in Chinese? I am nervous, because I applied for this, but have self studied Chinese for 4 years, I was not a Chinese major...I applied for 1 year TSCOL..should I have applied for a different program? Quite nervous!
Popular Post igacave Posted June 22, 2017 at 06:15 PM Popular Post Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 06:15 PM Guys, I don't know if you experiance something similar, but I started feeling terribly dismotivated. Till 15.06 I was busy doing so many thinks. Mostly connected with Chinese, but now I can't even keep up with things I love, like writing characters or listening to podcasts... 6
Badger Posted June 22, 2017 at 07:54 PM Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 07:54 PM @igacavesame exact thing happened to me!!! For past week my motivation has decreased for whatever psychological reason...usually I would spend a couple hours every evening studying..watching Chinese show, learning vocab, etc...and I've been doing that for years...but all of a sudden this past week, while waiting...man, it's not just me that feels this way! 1
Popular Post 方茹婷 Posted June 22, 2017 at 08:51 PM Popular Post Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 08:51 PM @igacave Totally same feeling here!!! I have been working so hard for a long time now (not to mention I graduated during this time...) just to collect money for this whole scholarship thing and now as there is no news at all...completely demotivated. I wish something happened already! 5
igacave Posted June 22, 2017 at 09:02 PM Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 09:02 PM @方茹婷 I did find this: Hanban will conduct an overall assessment of all applications and admit applicants on the basis of competitive selection. Normally, the admission results will be announced within 45 working days after the application materials are confirmed as valid. (source: https://confucius.oia.ncsu.edu/testing-scholarships/scholarship/) I don't know if it's valid info, but 45 working days for me should be next Wednesday. 1
New Members nyanko0 Posted June 22, 2017 at 10:04 PM New Members Report Posted June 22, 2017 at 10:04 PM Hello everyone I am also waiting for a response. It's been 2 (beginning of april) months since I applied for TCSOL. Last year, all my friends got response at the end of may and at the beginning of June. Last week my friend got rejected because she doesn't mention about becoming a teacher in the future and do MTCSOL after TCSOL...We applied at the same university but in different time (she sent it at the beginning of May).
New Members yahya Posted June 23, 2017 at 02:41 AM New Members Report Posted June 23, 2017 at 02:41 AM I am preadmitted since 2 months , this 45 days thing is fake 1
方茹婷 Posted June 23, 2017 at 08:57 AM Report Posted June 23, 2017 at 08:57 AM @igacave 45 days is already over for me....
New Members Cheenchin Posted June 23, 2017 at 11:48 AM New Members Report Posted June 23, 2017 at 11:48 AM Hi guys ! i was pre admitted by university and was on 3rd stage about a month , but today I' ve been pushed back to stage 2 with hanban message - 请查看处理意见记录。广东外语外贸大学预录取工作,没有责任到人。请在用户信息中明确填写本人姓名,请重新审核预录取。 院校审核 have anyone been in the same situation ? Or maybe could clarify what they mean? i really don't understand what should I do.. 1
foreigner2u Posted June 23, 2017 at 03:42 PM Report Posted June 23, 2017 at 03:42 PM @Badger I don't know if it's a compulsory requirement since there are applicants on this forum who don't have a Chinese major and still have gotten successfully preadmitted by their host unis But If you are interested here is what I found in the application guide about the TCSOL program: 3.1 向来华进修的在职汉语教师、预备攻读汉语国际教育硕士学位的汉语相关专业学生提供汉语国际教育课程和全额奖学金。 @nyanko0 I'm applying for TCSOL as well and I didn't mention anything about becoming a teacher in my personal statement either So I'm kinda likely to get rejected as well as your friend did u__u And when you said rejected you mean that she's already moved forward to the 5th stage but with a rejected status? or her application has gotten withdrawn all the way back to the first stage? @igacave The 45 days thing was part of the admission procedure last year, not this year though. I checked the link you put and I'm afraid that website has used all the information from last year and just put 2017 as if it was for this year. It even says that the requirement for a one year scholarship is to have a min score of 180 in HSK3 which drastically changed this year :/ However what makes me believe we are going to have our results pretty soon is that last year Hanban said the results would come out on June15th and we started to hear news in late May. So if this year we are supposed to get our results on July15th, I'm crossing my fingers to start hearing news in late June (next week) 2
igacave Posted June 23, 2017 at 04:59 PM Report Posted June 23, 2017 at 04:59 PM @foreigner2u You are right. I didn't notice, I was so desperate to know the date, so when I noticed "45 working days" I was over the moon full of hope. I wish we woke up on Monday with news on the webpage. 1
Badger Posted June 23, 2017 at 05:09 PM Report Posted June 23, 2017 at 05:09 PM @foreigner2u yes, I was also accepted by a university and I am waiting on the final step (hanban). But just because the university accepts people without Chinese major doesn't mean hanban will..but fingers crossed!
