Elwinneke Posted February 20, 2010 at 02:27 PM Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 at 02:27 PM This is probably a question for native speakers: I'm translating a texst about the use of numbers in Chinese naming. "发发发"是什么意思? 上下文: 有一个法官叫"888", 文章说是"发发发"的意思. 我要翻译文章可是我不知道"发发发"有什么意思?
trien27 Posted February 20, 2010 at 02:36 PM Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 at 02:36 PM (edited) 发发发: 发 = to be prosperous, to be rich. The Chinese word for "8", has a somewhat similar pronunciation in Mandarin. Therefore 发发发 = to be prosperous, times three = tons of money. The judge was using 888 as a pen name, and used 发发发 in his writings. They seem to mean the same thing. It's nothing special. Just something that sounds auspicious. I ment 饭馆 instead of 法官. Small difference Not really a small difference when comparing a judge to a restaurant! Ask the judge and see what he or she thinks. In this case, it's the name of the restaurant, where the owners wanted to have a play on words. tooironic Posted February 20, 2010 at 11:27 PM Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 at 11:27 PM I'm confused as to its real meaning and usage. The usages I found on Google Books are bizarre to say the least.
