dadamin Posted February 20, 2010 at 09:16 PM Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 at 09:16 PM Hi, I got a serious problem with MSWord files with TwinBridge 4.5 Before, I was using TwinBridge 4.5 on windows 95 and created a lot of files with this program. But, now, I switched to a new computer (Windows 7 + Office 2007 Familial) and I would like to use my past files. At the moment, I just see blocks. For information, my past computer has just floppy disks (no CD Burner and no USB). I don't know what to do. Any idea please ?
buzhongren Posted February 21, 2010 at 04:05 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 at 04:05 PM There is probably discussion elsewhere on the Internet migrating TwinBridge Windows 95 to Windows 7. What does TwinBridge say. The Blocks is the W7 way it doesnt recognize the character encoding. Somewhere in the editor (MSWord?) there is a drop down menu option that lets you specifify the encoding. There will be Asian characters like GB2312, BIG5, UTF8, UNICODE. Try various Asian choices if you see the characters make sure you save the file with that encoding. If no luck, save the file as html and view with web browser. It also will have a drop down menu for the character encoding. Try the ones mention. If they popup you will have to copy and paste to an editor. At this point when you save you will get a message saying you need to save as UTF8 or Unicode. Choose either. xiele, Jim

Kobo-Daishi Posted February 22, 2010 at 12:07 AM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 12:07 AM Dear Dadamin, I always thought that newer versions of MS Word have a feature to convert older Word file formats to the newer one. Does your old Windows 95 computer have Internet access? Perhaps you could upload your files to a file sharing web site and then use the newer computer to download them. Kobo-Daishi, PLLA. dadamin Posted February 22, 2010 at 12:53 AM Author Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 12:53 AM Dear Kobo-Daishi, Thanks for your reply Sorry, my old Windows 95 computer don't have Internet access (no USB plug) Anyway, I can do it with the Floppy disk. 15 years ago, there was no tool provided by Windows to write directly Chinese Characters on MS Word. So, TwinBridge and other popular programs were very helpful to write Chinese Characters. For information, TwinBridge is a software which is using his own encoding which is compatible with MS Word. There is no problem to open the MS Word file and read "Times New Roman" text for example, but I guess that the problem is about the conversion of the TwinBridge Fonts as "Chn JKaiTiB5 HY"

buzhongren Posted February 22, 2010 at 03:43 AM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 03:43 AM You are not trying to change fonts just encoding. A font is just the way the encoding is displayed. Strip one of your files down to a line or so. Save as txt, html, word. Load each file as an attachment here. It may be TwinBridge used its own encoding for Windows 95. The fact that you see Blocks on W7 is a positive. Also if you can make the first character of the file cha2 the tea character 茶. You will do that on W95 then save as the 3 fore mentioned file types on W7. I know how this character is encoded in all major encodings. If I see something different then you are probably out of luck. Im surprised TwinBridge didnt provide a migration path. Asian support on W95 was two byte characters making a pair implemented by each vendor. On NT of which W7 is a decendent every character Asian and Ascii are automatically Unicode two bytes. xiele, Jim
gato Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:23 AM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:23 AM There are a couple of things you can try: 1. On your Windows 95 system, try saving the files under another format (such as HZ or GB) using TwinBridge. Then bring the files over to your new system. 2. Or try one of these utilities from TwinBridge. It seems that TwinBridge has been acquired by LinguistSoftware. http://www.linguistsoftware.com/twinc.htm TwinBridge Chinese Partner • Code Converter – Converts the internal code of a file to another code. For instance, after opening a file written in GB code, Code Converter can convert the file to Big-5 code. • Super Meta Utility – Converts TwinBridge Chinese Partner-supported fonts to Windows standard Meta Graphics format for use in graphics software. • Single-Byte Converter – Converts TwinBridge Chinese Partner-supported fonts to Windows standard single-byte TrueType fonts. Ideal for applying special graphics effects to Chinese text (such as wrapping text around an object in a graphic). Here's someone from Microsoft addressing the TwinBridge font question, but I don't think his suggestion works. http://unicode.org/mail-arch/unicode-ml/Archives-Old/UML023/0265.html RE: Twinbridge & Word 2000 From: Chris Pratley (chrispr@MICROSOFT.com) Date: Tue Jun 27 2000 - 19:21:24 EDT
dadamin Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:25 AM Author Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:25 AM Hi buzhongren, I can not upload new files at the moment from my old Windows95 computer because I need to find another computer with an Hard Floppy Disk ... I will do it as soon as possible with the the tea character 茶. I'm surprised too that TwinBridge didnt provide a migration path. I just found that there is a free Unicode Chinese TrueType font offered by Twinbridge " TSC JSong S TT" but it's not displaying my characters. If you can have a look to the attach file, it will be great.
buzhongren Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:55 AM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:55 AM I looked at the .doc file. I use StarOffice on Linux which recognizes MSWord format. I see the Blocks also. It wont let me change language encoding. I save as txt or html and play with the encoding. No luck. I think GATO has the best suggestion especially if you can save as big5 or gb2312 on W95 Twinbridge. While you are there on W95 save the tea character as I suggested. xiele, Jim
buzhongren Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:22 PM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:22 PM I did some more homework. You use this guys Visual Basic Macros inside Word http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/course_resources/s02/convert_macro.htm to convert Chn FMing S5 to TSC UMing S TT to Unicode. I think they will run inside Linux OpenOffice which I will try later today. It is better to try if you have Word. xiele, Jim
dadamin Posted February 22, 2010 at 05:20 PM Author Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 05:20 PM Thanks for your different tutorials. I just can try the solution with Visual Basic Macros at the moment . http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/co...vert_macro.htm I am not regular user of Visual Basic Macros but I will try my best. I found how to have little squares as mentionned in the tutorial but impossible to convert it. I will repost here my findings in 2 hours. buzhongren Posted February 22, 2010 at 06:00 PM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 06:00 PM When I move my cursor to the Block areas I see Chn JKaiTiB5 HY;Chn FMing S5 as the font. At some point you want to see TSC UMing S TT before you do the Global Replace with SimSun. If the macros dont work plug Chn FMing S5 into Google. There is a free .ttf font you can download to W7. Unless W7 changed its font file format from earlier versions of Win32. xiele, Jim
jbradfor Posted February 22, 2010 at 07:02 PM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 07:02 PM Please have a look to the attach file I'm a little confused. I thought you were posting a file from TwinBridge for Window 95? But this document is not from that program: inside the text is the string "http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/drawingml/2006/main". So what exactly did you post? Or did I misunderstand you?

dadamin Posted February 22, 2010 at 07:45 PM Author Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 07:45 PM (edited) Hi, The tutorial : "How to install and use the Word Macro" is very helpful to convert VBA macros to convert Big5 code to Unicode. http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/course_resources/s02/convert_macro.htm Unfortunately, I forget to mention that I would like to use VBA macros to convert simplified Characters. By the way, I uploaded the file for people who want to use VBA macros to convert Big5 code to Unicode. I will contact Michael A. Fuller who created this tutorial to ask him if he knows the solution for GB18030 Encoding. Thanks again for your recommendations big5tou.zip Edited February 22, 2010 at 08:02 PM by dadamin
buzhongren Posted February 22, 2010 at 09:12 PM Report Share Posted February 22, 2010 at 09:12 PM You didnt see the two macros normal.module1.convertming or normal.module2.convertmingsymbol. The TwinBridge font documentation http://www.twinbridge.com/Doc/fontCJK6.pdf says CHNMING is 2 byte BIG5 I dont know if you have this font packaged installed on W95 but all you have to do is change font from BIG5 CHNFMING to UNICODE TSCFMING. Notice that is all he is doing with the macros: converting Twinbridge BIG5 CHN to Twinbridge UNICODE TSC. To make the characters visible he uses the default W7 Unicode font SimSun. xiele, Jim
dadamin Posted February 23, 2010 at 12:30 AM Author Report Share Posted February 23, 2010 at 12:30 AM At this point, I didn't find the proper solution but, I stay positive because there are other options. 1. Michael Fuller replied to my email and said that he can not say that the macros he wrote work very well on my specific problem. They will need some serious debugging. However, he pointed out to this free viewer http://www.njstar.com/cms/ The quality of the font is not enough good and I would like to use MS Word only at the end. 2. I tried to debug the macros to make it happen but my lack of knowledge in encoding is too important. So, I found how to get traditional Characters instead of Block; but impossible for me to get the simplified character. (I think that it was so close...) 3. I will follow all of your suggestions directly on my old windows95 but I can not at the moment because of technical problems (the Hard Disk is safe anyway) 4. The twinBridge support team didn't give me feedback Thanks a lot to all of you who are taking time to help me. I will update this thread when I will find the solution. Kobo-Daishi Posted February 23, 2010 at 01:09 AM Report Share Posted February 23, 2010 at 01:09 AM Dear Dadamin, 1. Michael Fuller replied to my email and said that he can not say that the macros he wrote work very well on my specific problem. They will need some serious debugging. However, he pointed out to this free viewer http://www.njstar.com/cms/The quality of the font is not enough good and I would like to use MS Word only at the end. Does this mean that you are now able to view the text files in NJStar on Windows 7 but the only problem is that the font included with NJStar is ugly? The NJStar trial versions' fonts are set up so that with point sizes above 12 or so it loses resolution. That way you'll buy the full version. 2. I tried to debug the macros to make it happen but my lack of knowledge in encoding is too important. So, I found how to get traditional Characters instead of Block; but impossible for me to get the simplified character. (I think that it was so close...) So, now you are able to view files written using traditional characters on the Windows 7 system? Are your text files a mix of traditional characters and simplified characters? Or are your simplified character text files separate from your traditional character text files. Kobo-Daishi, PLLA.
