mconstant Posted February 21, 2010 at 01:53 AM Report Posted February 21, 2010 at 01:53 AM Hello, I hope this is the correct forum to post in. Is it possible for an American student with little to no Mandarin Chinese language skills to go to college full-time in China? Would it be possible to get a degree? I am interested in TEFL and a BA will help a lot, I am hoping it is possible to get one in China. Please let me know!!! Quote
taylor04 Posted February 21, 2010 at 10:47 PM Report Posted February 21, 2010 at 10:47 PM It's possible if you find some foreign universities in China. I know my roommate went to the Nottingham branch in Ningbo. I don't know if theres a website with these universities or not, but they are out there. My question is why do you want to get a degree in China when you can't speak the language? Do you plan on learning the language? Quote
natra Posted February 22, 2010 at 01:32 AM Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 01:32 AM There are many schools in Mainland China that you could enroll in. For instance, the college of Chinese Language and Culture at Nankai offers a 4 year program for foreigners wanting to major in Chinese, but have not studied the language before. If you were to enter a different college, you would need to take language classes for a year or more until you passed the HSK. Quote
mconstant Posted February 22, 2010 at 03:56 AM Author Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 03:56 AM Well, I am wanting to TEFL and I am extremely interested in learning the language as well. Are there any other colleges you know of to attend? Quote
natra Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:20 AM Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:20 AM If you want to teach in a university, then you generally need at least a bachelors degree. Regardless of where you are there will be opportunities to teach English in some form though. Quote
mconstant Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:22 AM Author Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:22 AM I checked out the university you mentioned and sent them an email. Do you know of any other university's is China? Quote
xiaotao Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:33 AM Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:33 AM Maybe the Oregon Chinese Flagship Program would suit you. No Chinese required. The students get to study in China. Quote
mconstant Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:35 AM Author Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 04:35 AM (edited) Is it a full-time degree program? I want to obtain a BA in Asia. Thanks! Are there any universities that offer a full-time 4-year degree? Any with English language courses? Please let me know! Why I want to do TEFL... 1. Great chance to travel the world and I want to make a difference. Plus, in this job market, it is difficult to come by a job. In China there is an abundance of TEFL jobs. 2. I have always been fascinated by the Chinese culture. Edited February 22, 2010 at 07:06 AM by chrix Quote
Chinadoog Posted February 22, 2010 at 06:39 AM Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 06:39 AM (edited) Having a uni job where you only work 12-16 hours a week and make 5,000-6,000RMB a month (in Beijing or Shanghai you should definitely make more than that though) is also a great way for you to live in China and have a lot of spare time to study the language. I don't know if you're planning on taking an actual TEFL course or not, but a lot of the time it's not worth it IMO. Lots of good teaching jobs out there that don't require TEFL.
