one99 Posted February 21, 2010 at 06:28 AM Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 at 06:28 AM Hi, I just came accross the free Chinese Hour Self Taught course on their website (www.chinesehour.com). I just had a look at the demo lesson and it seems to me to be a really good way to learn chinese by yourself. I searched but can't see any other opinions on it. Anyone has used this? Meng Lelan Posted February 21, 2010 at 02:49 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 at 02:49 PM Just took a look - there's a video demo of how to pronounce each sound? I haven't tried it yet but I might try it on my deaf student who wants to learn how to speechread Chinese.
anonymoose Posted February 21, 2010 at 03:48 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 at 03:48 PM learn how to speechread Chinese I don't know, but, wouldn't speechreading (you mean lipreading, right?) Chinese be quite difficult? Can you lipread tones?
Meng Lelan Posted February 21, 2010 at 05:17 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2010 at 05:17 PM There's a thread about that somewhere in here, speechreading in Chinese. You can speechread the words but not the tones. It was great fun trying to speechread what Zhao Hongbo and Shen Xue were saying to each other on TV on the Olympics before and after their skates. So it's do-able, but not with 100% accuracy. Anyway yes, I just looked at the ChineseHour site. It does have those mini videos showing pronunciation. That has got to be great resource for my deaf student here.
atitarev Posted March 15, 2010 at 02:01 AM Report Share Posted March 15, 2010 at 02:01 AM I know an older guy in Melbourne who is their student and he is very happy. They are based in Wuhan. I had in contacts with them. I had to cancel at the last minute because I am now enrolled in a Chinese diploma course. I will try again when I finish the course. It looks very interesting and efficient. A lady from Chinese Hour may soon try to advertise here.
Lu Posted March 15, 2010 at 03:55 PM Report Share Posted March 15, 2010 at 03:55 PM This will sound silly, but I love the fact that just because someone's deaf, that doesn't mean they can't learn Chinese, and even speechread it. Jiayou to you and your student, Meng Lelan, I think this is awesome.
Meng Lelan Posted March 15, 2010 at 04:17 PM Report Share Posted March 15, 2010 at 04:17 PM A lady from Chinese Hour may soon try to advertise here. Good, because I want to ask if the student and I can bypass their free assessment and go straight to that self taught course.
Meng Lelan Posted March 15, 2010 at 04:30 PM Report Share Posted March 15, 2010 at 04:30 PM This will sound silly, but I love the fact that just because someone's deaf, that doesn't mean they can't learn Chinese, and even speechread it. Jiayou to you and your student, Meng Lelan, I think this is awesome. It sounds silly to the administrators here to the point where they want to whip my rear end to no end whatsoever just for protesting that American Sign Language is not a foreign language and deaf kids should be taking Chinese or Japanese or whatever for the foreign language requirement. You should see their faces when I make that point of objection at the meetings.

roddy Posted March 15, 2010 at 11:54 PM Report Share Posted March 15, 2010 at 11:54 PM A lady from Chinese Hour may soon try to advertise here. They've advertised in the past. Always appreciated if people mention to companies if they heard about a service on here - makes sure they know we're here and useful. atitarev Posted March 16, 2010 at 01:17 AM Report Share Posted March 16, 2010 at 01:17 AM Yes, Roddy, I recommended the Chinese-forums.com to a teacher from ChineseHour.com. She may not know that they have already advertised here. Feel free to use the email above to contact them.
Meng Lelan Posted March 27, 2010 at 02:55 PM Report Share Posted March 27, 2010 at 02:55 PM I just came accross the free Chinese Hour Self Taught course on their website Ok, I just contacted Chinese Hour. I explained about my deaf student wanting access to the videos in the Self Taught course so he can learn speechreading in Chinese. Not very helpful reply from them saying you have to enroll as a student taking one on one online lessons from them to use the Self Taught course. In other words it's not free. So I'm trying to find out if the Self Taught course is on some DVD-CD that we can buy, and not sign up for one on one online lessons. We don't want one on one online lessons because online access is restricted during school hours.
