Ian_Lee Posted August 26, 2004 at 07:01 PM Report Posted August 26, 2004 at 07:01 PM For the first time in ROC's Olympic history, Chinese Taipei got two Gold Medals on a row in Taekwondo. Taekwondo, which is a national sport of Korea, isn't monopolized by Koreans as Quest assumes Judo is by Japanese. First with Silver and Bronze Medals in Archery and then Gold Medals in Taekwondo, Taiwan seems to have found the clue in Olympics: (1) Don't rely on imported athletes from Mainland -- because they can never beat their counterparts from PRC in the competition (too bad HK seems to follow this erroneous path); (2) Find a sport event that is suited to Asian athletes and nurture homegrown ahletes. Though it seems a bit too late for ROC to get its first Gold Medal in Olympics (I think it first participated in Olympics in Berlin in 1936), nevertheless, Israel did not get its first Gold Medal until yesterday. shibo77 Posted August 29, 2004 at 06:42 PM Report Posted August 29, 2004 at 06:42 PM What anthymn do they play for Chinese Taipei, China Hong Kong, and China Macau? Thank you! -Shibo Quote
fernando Posted September 30, 2004 at 06:08 AM Report Posted September 30, 2004 at 06:08 AM Shibo, I don't know what song they play for Taiwan but it is definitely not the national anthem. It's not the flag either. I think they should have chose the theme from Rocky, or We Are the Champions if they weren't allowed to use the anthem. I don't think there is such a thing as China HK or China Macau! Quote
Cyberian Posted December 21, 2004 at 02:33 PM Report Posted December 21, 2004 at 02:33 PM No anthem was played at all during the 2 gold medals. There is a Hong Kong team, but I don't recall a Macau team. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted December 21, 2004 at 06:49 PM Author Report Posted December 21, 2004 at 06:49 PM One interesting note. One of the Chinese Taipei Gold medalist in Taekwondo has been invited to Mainland for coaching. In 2008, you may see a China athlete competing with another Chinese Taipei athlete on the stage in Taekwondo. Quote
