Does a Chinese passport have to be renewed in China or can it be renewed at a chinese embassy? My wife's passport expires in September 2011. When and where will she need to renew it (she will probably be in Ireland in 2011), i.e. can she do it here in Dublin or will she need to go back to China?

If it helps, I am fairly confident the correct answers for Chinese in the U.S. would be "embassy" and "renew before expiration" (although I would personally not wait until the last minute to do something like this, since in addition to producing anxiety, I have seen it can introduce unexpected negative complications).

I'd further guess information applicable for other countries (and recommended application timeframes) could likely be found on-line without too much effort, and that this would be a worthwhile use of time, but of course don't know. I have only seen some of the seemingly numerous websites discussing passport/visa/immigration issues for Chinese in U.S.

My husband renewed his Chinese passport at the Chinese Embassy in London. Only trouble he had was they wanted proof that he didn't have a UK passport but he told them that was their job, not his, and so they dropped that.

Have you tried calling the Chinese embassy in Ireland with this question? Why do you think people here would know better than the Chinese embassy?

That being said, yes a Chinese passport can be renewed at a Chinese embassy. Here in Holland it can only be done if the passport is within one year of expiration, it doesn't take overly long. I don't know about the costs. But really, consider doing some research yourself before asking here.
