zerolife Posted March 10, 2010 at 09:46 PM Report Posted March 10, 2010 at 09:46 PM I was wondering if anyone on this board is working in the Information Assurance / Information Security field in China or has any idea on the job market in this field for foreigners. So I've recently been accepted to to the Carnegie Mellon University Information Security Policy & Management program (M.S.). It's considered one of the best, if not the best, in the Information Management field the US. The program I'm going into is actually a more broader policy & management oriented information assurance program rather than a "computer science" oriented Information Security program. However my ultimate goal is to move to China after graduation and find a job in related field there. Do you guys think it would sound realistic or should I apply to somewhere closer to China like HKU (I think they have a similar program)? Some personal background info: - my undergraduate degree is in International Affairs so I'm more interested in policy & management than pure technical stuff - I am a GGC (Germany-Grown-Chinese) very fluent in speaking and intermediate level in reading/writing - a little over one year working experience as an analyst in internet piracy - I'm not sure if my volunteering experience for the Olympics is a plus Quote
taylor04 Posted March 10, 2010 at 10:48 PM Report Posted March 10, 2010 at 10:48 PM I can't speak from experience, but I'm assuming there would be some demand for this. I read a while back that China was the second most hacked country in the world, following the US. I'd guess your best bet would be to find a foreign company in China, possibly a financial company.... Too bad it looks like Googles pulling out Quote
zerolife Posted March 11, 2010 at 12:23 AM Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 at 12:23 AM thanks for the response ... not to mention that China is the #1 source of hacking attempts. Last I heard, Google isn't even planning to pull out from China ... it was all a PR stunt that in my opinion damaged Google more than they've bargained for. Quote
gato Posted March 11, 2010 at 12:29 AM Report Posted March 11, 2010 at 12:29 AM You should look into what kind of jobs the alums of this program are working now, and where such jobs might be in China. I suspect that it will be tough to find an IT policy job in China, with an expat salary. Quote
zerolife Posted March 15, 2010 at 02:37 PM Author Report Posted March 15, 2010 at 02:37 PM @gato good idea, unfortunantly, the program is fairly new and they only take ~ 21 people a year. So far, they don't have any employment statistics for China as most stay in the US or go [back] to India (large population from India but that's not surprising for a IT related program). However, the career center is willing to work with me on identifying opportunities in China. Quote
