Wel, as I'm living alone in another city I decided to keep her. I'm a student of chinese (so far, really basic) and I'd like to give her a beatiful chinese name. the cat's a female. She has a lot of fur, grey with bits of yellow. Suggestions would be appreciated.
skylee Posted March 13, 2010 at 02:27 PM Report Share Posted March 13, 2010 at 02:27 PM My folks have two cats, one is mostly white with a black tail and a Gorbachev black patch, the other is black with white chest and paws. They call the white one 豆腐 (tofu) and the black one 芝麻 (sesame), You can see their photos here. Does the cat remind you of anything or do you have anything in mind about how you would like to call it? Does it look like silver? How about 銀子 (yinzi - silver/money). Or does it look like a cloud of dust (I've seen a grey long-hair cat which looks like a ball of dust)? If so how about 小土 (xiaotu, i.e. 尘, dust)? Kai13 Posted March 13, 2010 at 02:52 PM Author Report Share Posted March 13, 2010 at 02:52 PM Well, I've always been a fan of the word "silver" (due to the pokemon games), I really like the name 銀子. It is appropriate for a female, right? Do you know of any any that can be read in both chinese and japanese? I still haven't spend much time with her, because I'm living in another city, I'll keep her because my grandma's oldest cat doens't acept her (lol). That said, I still don't know how she acts, overall, I don't know her, except for the things I already said. I attached a pic of her, though I'm afraid the colors aren't reliable. But yeah, she's mostly grey, with a bit here and there of yellow, a mix. Even though I liked the name, any more suggestions would be great! Thank you so much skylee , the cats of your friend are really cute!
Kai13 Posted March 14, 2010 at 04:20 PM Author Report Share Posted March 14, 2010 at 04:20 PM Well, if it helps, she came because it was raining a lot, and there was a lot of wind. My grandma took her in and now I'll keep her.

knadolny Posted March 16, 2010 at 03:11 AM Report Share Posted March 16, 2010 at 03:11 AM I named one of my cats Xiao Long Mao, as in Little Dragon Kitty. I was playing on the words of my favorite Chinese food (xiao long bao - dumplings) and it turns out the name also translates into Little Totoro in Japanese. Totoro is a famous cartoon here. So it works in the three languages I know. My other cat is named Xiao Maoqiu as in Little Furball. I guess that translates into Japanese as well but it doesn't sound as good. Sorry can't input the characters at the moment. Your cat looks sweet. Have fun with the names!
Shi Tong Posted March 16, 2010 at 12:28 PM Report Share Posted March 16, 2010 at 12:28 PM I've always wanted to call a cat chairman mao, but change the tone of mao2 to mao1, changing it from fur to cat.
