markwhiteman Posted March 31, 2010 at 02:27 PM Report Posted March 31, 2010 at 02:27 PM Hi everyone. I'm struggling a little bit to get my head around the research and conflicting ideas, so thought I'd start this new thread. I'm due to start teaching English in China (TEFL) in late August 2010, and having no experience of the Mandarin language I'm looking for courses in or near Beijing or Tianjin, though preferably Beijing since it is where my TEFL placement commences. I hope to begin learning late-June, which permits about 4-6 weeks learning. So I need recommendations! And this is what I'm looking for: (a) An intensive absolute-beginners course, 20-30 hours/week (B) a 4-6 week long course. © Preferably one-on-one 'individual' tutoring, since there are so many negative reports of group learning. I think this is the best idea, but am happy to hear differing opinions. (d) Accommodation: should I go with homestay or get a private shared appartment? Homestay seems like a good idea as it gives me an opportunity to practice. ***I've already done quite extensive research on Mandarin House, Mandarin Rocks and iMandarin, but have since discovered negative reports about private schools (e.g. mixed abilities in the same class).*** Really appreciate your help and look forward to your responses.
