identity_x Posted April 6, 2010 at 09:51 AM Report Posted April 6, 2010 at 09:51 AM Hello, I need your help... Anyone know what this name 雪玲 means? Does it have any meaning? I know the first character means snow and the second means bell. But put together? Thank you for reading! Quote
Shi Tong Posted April 6, 2010 at 11:18 AM Report Posted April 6, 2010 at 11:18 AM Good question, I have no idea. The first thing that did come to my mind though, is that it might be some kind of thing used for snow, because I know that 滑雪板 (huáxuěbǎn) means snowboard. Maybe a 滑雪玲 is something and you've missed out the first word. I'm probably wrong, because I cant find it in a dictionary! Other than that, would it be the sound of snow falling? Quote
roddy Posted April 6, 2010 at 11:40 AM Report Posted April 6, 2010 at 11:40 AM I suspect it's just a pretty name . . . Quote
creamyhorror Posted April 6, 2010 at 02:17 PM Report Posted April 6, 2010 at 02:17 PM "Snowbell" is indeed a pretty name. Quote
Shi Tong Posted April 6, 2010 at 02:54 PM Report Posted April 6, 2010 at 02:54 PM 雪玲 actually kind of reminds me of some of those martial arts names, like 如月 or something. Quote
lacrimosa1983 Posted April 6, 2010 at 09:58 PM Report Posted April 6, 2010 at 09:58 PM "雪” means snow, and for Chinese snow means pure, clean and honest; the word "玲“ is not bell, bell is "铃“,玲 means refined, nice, delicate, beautiful. for the name 雪玲, I guess her parents want their daughter to become a beautiful, clean and honest girl, don not be polluted by dust. Shi Tong Posted April 8, 2010 at 02:55 PM Report Posted April 8, 2010 at 02:55 PM 玲 líng onomat. ting-a-ling (in compounds such as 玎玲 or 玲瓏|玲珑) / tinkling of gem-pendants Is the dictionary wrong then? (Seriously!!) Quote
xiaocai Posted April 8, 2010 at 03:18 PM Report Posted April 8, 2010 at 03:18 PM 玲 is quite commonly used in girl names, and I don't think too many people actually care what it means, as long as it sounds nice... And why 如月 is an martial art name? Quote
lacrimosa1983 Posted April 8, 2010 at 03:24 PM Report Posted April 8, 2010 at 03:24 PM 如月 is an martial art name, who told you? Quote
alleywatson Posted April 8, 2010 at 11:18 PM Report Posted April 8, 2010 at 11:18 PM xue3 ling2 Just a name isn't it ? Quote
Shi Tong Posted April 9, 2010 at 11:52 AM Report Posted April 9, 2010 at 11:52 AM Sorry, 如月is the name of one of the characters in Crouching Tiger... or at least, I thought it was. Quote
Elroch Posted April 9, 2010 at 12:12 PM Report Posted April 9, 2010 at 12:12 PM I believe 雪玲 is a female Chinese name (which you probably already surmised). Obviously, without any other usage it has no meaning beyond the association with the meaning of its two characters. But it is a nice picture ("tinkling of snow"). Quote
