Liang Jieming Posted September 3, 2004 at 04:56 PM Report Posted September 3, 2004 at 04:56 PM Chinese Achievements in History Few people know the many achievements of the Chinese. Many innovative or cultural firsts are unknown and acclaim incorrectly attributed to others. This is unfortunate, due in part to the ignorance of the Chinese of their own history. Emerging from the transitory period of the late 19-20th century, China as a country and as a culture was in turmoil. Historic relics and text were destroyed and lost, a result of conflicts or a blind rush to modernize. So widespread is this ignorance that many no longer recognize the achievements of the past. It's sad that many only know the common world view of history, blind to the pioneering strides of our forefathers. How many know the discoveries of ZhengHe's fleets, or that Chinese Astronomers recorded Halley's Comet centuries before Halley did, or that Chinese settlements were mining Australia 350 years before Capt Cook's "discovery"? Chinese have settled all over the world in recent years. Economically secure, academically strong and culturally Chinese, they represent a truly global network to bind us together. A growing realization of a need for strong cultural roots and identity has led us to delve back to rediscover our past. Examples abound of historical inaccuracies that we as a people, should address and make known to the world. Time we acknowledged our roots, take pride in our achievements and stand tall as inheritors of the DragonSeed Legacy! Join us for a chat! Liang Jieming Quote
