skylee Posted April 12, 2010 at 03:15 PM Report Posted April 12, 2010 at 03:15 PM Because it sounds ridiculous to me. And of course its Cantonese pronunciation is close to lekzan. To many Hong Kong people, the name 燦 brings the image of a backward foolish redneck, all because of this drama character. The combination of 叻 and 燦 sounds very funny. And 叻 is not used in real names. But you should know that we now laugh at ourselves and call ourselves 港燦. Quote
alxndr Posted April 12, 2010 at 03:47 PM Author Report Posted April 12, 2010 at 03:47 PM 谢谢 skylee, that's the kind of input I was hoping for. I had a feeling that would be the case with 叻 。And I suppose a name with any character pronounced càn as the second syllable would remind people of 阿灿? This makes me inclined to look for a character pronounced zàn (had 赞 in my other name) or cāng or something instead. Any suggestions? Or other bumble-headed dramatic figures with similar names to avoid? Quote
