Guest realmayo Posted April 11, 2010 at 10:38 AM Report Posted April 11, 2010 at 10:38 AM For some reason I want to start cooking Chinese soup, & not just because I've seen so many of those soup cooking machines next to the rice cookers and want to buy one. Has anyone used one of those things before (here's a photo of one if you're not sure what I mean). Any advice? Quote
abcdefg Posted April 11, 2010 at 01:55 PM Report Posted April 11, 2010 at 01:55 PM Has anyone used one of those things before ... Any advice? I use mine a lot, even more so when the weather was cold. Advice: buy one. They are usually called 自动电炖锅 = zì dòng diàn dùnguō = automatic electric stew cooker. I paid 139 RMB at Suning 苏宁 in January. Cheaper ones are available. Mine is Midea brand and it works very well. Easy to use to make good stews and soups -- nourishing one-dish meal with rice on the side. Use it like a "slow cooker." Cleanup is easy. They come in different sizes. I posted something here about them earlier and will see if I can find the link. ---------------- Edit: here's the previous post http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/35-traditional-simplified-characters089 Quote
Bob161 Posted April 11, 2010 at 06:10 PM Report Posted April 11, 2010 at 06:10 PM looks like a crock pot. is it the same thing? If so, they're great for slow cooking stews and soups. Quote

xiaotao Posted April 12, 2010 at 02:50 PM Report Posted April 12, 2010 at 02:50 PM I have used my slow cooker to make rice porridge for breakfast. Put the ingredient in and turn on before you go to sleep. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted April 13, 2010 at 07:16 AM Report Posted April 13, 2010 at 07:16 AM Thanks for the advice. And now I know what a crock pot is... I went to buy one of these things today but the saleswoman was a bit uncertain and thought I was odd buying it to cook anything other than 3-4 hour 炖 soups. So I didn't buy it, but will find a bigger store and hopefully a more knowleagable saleswoman. (And maybe I'm just becoming too jaded about China, but I was amazed the woman actually told me she thought the thing was unsuitable, rather than keeping her views to herself and flogging it to me regardless. ) Quote
