I'm not sure if I put this in the right place...

I have a Chinese friend who had a 15 yr old dog who she loved like her own child. I just found out that it died last month and that she's been having a hard time dealing with it. I'd like to send a sympathy card or note. We usually correspond in Chinese, but I'm not sure what the appropriate wording might be in this situation. Any advice? Thanks.

When my 18-year old cat died a couple of years ago, I sent this message to my brother - "你不要傷心,他年紀大了,平常也只能躺着。你把他照顧得很好,不枉緣份一場。” From my blog.

Thanks! Are there gentler terms to use for death, like in English when we say someone "passed away"?

過身,過世,去世. For a pet I think you could use 去世. Or 離去 (left).
