(basically, a scholar without an official post, in historical China)

Time waits for no man.

It's a very common idiom in Chinese.:roll:

rivercao is right, I'm sure this is supposed to be a translation of the English saying "Time waits for no man/ (person in this case in the Chinese), but I've not heard it before in Chinese as 时间不等人.

It's a bit like the translation of 一石两鸟- one stone two birds, or in English (two birds with one stone), it's originally English and translated into Chinese.
