YingTao Posted April 14, 2010 at 07:27 AM Report Share Posted April 14, 2010 at 07:27 AM I have been trying to find an online resource for Chinese vocabulary but most of them are pay sites. Are there any free ones? I've been using my dictionary or online dictionaries but they don't have specific things, like breeds of dogs and whatnot. I tried to search and find if this had been asked before but the search function on this forum doesn't seem to be working for me. Just looking for essentially a big list chopped into categories... If there isn't one would anyone suggest a book?

xiaotao Posted April 14, 2010 at 03:38 PM Report Share Posted April 14, 2010 at 03:38 PM English Chinese Dictionary by Practical Categorized Usage isbn 974175714 by William and Marco Liang. I bought this book because it had special categories of specific vocabulary that I might not easily find in a regular dictionary such as medical, herbal medicine, banking, computer/internet, etc. No category for breed of dogs though. I just got a Boston Terrier, I bet the people in China never seen one. MDBG is most helpful in learning new character combinations. It's almost completely perfect and free. I wouldn't be able to do all the translating I do without it.

trevelyan Posted April 14, 2010 at 09:43 PM Report Share Posted April 14, 2010 at 09:43 PM We have a lot of specialty vocabulary in Adso, particularly for news/finance/international content. The dictionary database is free to download and incorporate is just about anything, so perhaps it may be useful to you: http://popupchinese.com/downloads
Chris333 Posted April 15, 2010 at 06:09 AM Report Share Posted April 15, 2010 at 06:09 AM I've been using Lingt for about a month. I like it so far. It is based on an algorithm which supposedly makes you review words right before you forget them. One of the most beneficial features is the interface; you have to chose the correct word in chinese/pinyin and in English (multiple choice format.) You also have to type the pinyin with tone marks, which forces you to remember the tones. There's another site, I think it's called Lingq, which I'm told is similar.
