pablo Posted April 17, 2010 at 02:47 PM Report Posted April 17, 2010 at 02:47 PM Can anyone tell me what the word "KONDO" might mean? It is an english spelling of a Chinese word so it might be phonetic - "Kahn-doe" etc. Anyone can help?!?!?! Thanks. Quote
renzhe Posted April 18, 2010 at 02:06 AM Report Posted April 18, 2010 at 02:06 AM Do you have any other information? Which dialect? It doesn't sound Chinese. Assuming a strong American pronunciation, the first part could be "kan" and the second one either "dou". But that doesn't really mean anything. It could be a valid combination in some contexts, but without context, nobody knows. Possibly "kandao" = to see, to have seen. But this is all just random guessing. Kondo is a common Japanese surname, BTW. It's likely that the word is Japanese. Quote
rivercao Posted April 18, 2010 at 03:00 AM Report Posted April 18, 2010 at 03:00 AM Any context? Can you show me the Chinese character? It's hard to assume with the English words given. Quote
pablo Posted April 19, 2010 at 02:20 PM Author Report Posted April 19, 2010 at 02:20 PM The word is being used by a Chinese woman, directed at a man. She is from western Fujian province, but lives now in Fuzhou. She and the man dated, but broke up and she is unhappy so we think it is related to that... In an email she wrote - "Dear Kondo" ... Thanks for your help! Quote
creamyhorror Posted April 20, 2010 at 05:26 AM Report Posted April 20, 2010 at 05:26 AM In an email she wrote - "Dear Kondo" ... Why would you think it's a Chinese word, if it's being used in English text? And it even looks like a name... Chinese know hanyu pinyin, and "kondo" clearly isn't hanyu pinyin, so it's not a Mandarin word. It seems unlikely to me for it to be a dialect word, too. Quote
