Any information about life in Yongzhou

Hi everyone,

well, I think I have decided on a city to teach in when my hubby and I go to teach in August. I have requested Yongzhou from our agency. It seems nice. The campus is pretty, the city is not too big, not too small, and it is only three hours from Guilin. But other than a few pictures and numbers, I have actually found very little information about what the city is really like. If anyone has lived or visited Yongzhou and has any information about it (things to do, places to eat, where to shop, is there a McDonalds) I would love to hear from you.

Thanks!

Do you mean Yangshuo?( 阳朔)

No, I mean Yongzhou in Hunan province.

This will be 永州 I think, 阳朔's a lot closer and there's plenty of information about it.

Well, I can't read chinese yet, so I guess I will have to take your word for it, lol. So is it the first characters or the second ones that you think will be the one I am moving to?

I don't think you'll get much of a response here - it seems like the kind of place that not many foreigners go to.

I guess it will be very "Chinese" there.

I've been to Yongzhuo. About twelve years ago, so anything I say may be well past its sell buy date.

It is an interesting town - lots of preserved tradition and history which is unusual in China, but very Chinese in the sense that there will be little in the way of western comforts.

Not that that that is a bad thing. Its proximity to Guilin may be. (Guilin is a rip off tourist hell.)

Is there a McDonalds? I hope not! Enjoy the local food! It is astonishingly good.

Liuzhou,

thanks for the response! I was actually hpoing to find a place that was still very "chinese." I didn't want to go to china and spend the whole time in a westernized city (the main reason I didn't want to go to Shanghai, but we will be visiting it). The Western comforts are more for mu husband's sake, he is worred about the food while I am much more willing to try new things. Things to do at night would be a plus though since we work all day. What do people do in the evenings in smaller towns in China? Clubs? Kareoke? Sit and watch the grass grow?
