Yes, I thought 呆 means "to stay" but 待 means “to stay for a short time”.

I just checked some online dictionaries, it seems 呆 also means "stay for a short time", but in the example sentences, 呆 just means "to stay", no time limitation.

dāi

【动】

暂时住在〖某处〗〖stay〗

但这一来,我就不能在镇头市呆下去了。——《潘虎》

又如:她喜欢呆在娘家

[ 结果来源于: http://tool.httpcn.com/Zi/Find.html?/=5446 ]

But 待 is definitely a short time.

dāi

停留,逗留,迟延:你待一会儿再走

[ 结果来源于: http://tool.httpcn.com/Zi/Find.html?/=5F85 ]

So I personally think 呆 sounds better because 待 means just waiting for a short time, does not do anything, so in that sentence, 呆 is better, 待 implies the girl has been in Australia and hasn't do anything for 1 year. Right? I'm not sure.

renzhe, you are so brave to challenge rivercao, whose Chinese is better than 95% of the members here.

So are you being jealous of me? Or do you think I was too conservative to say that number?

Neither. I was praising renzhe's courage.

Good thing renzhe's Chinese is better than 98% of the members here :tong

Back on topic, for "He is from China", why is 他来自中国 better than 他是中国人? The former sounds more like a direct translation to me, but the second sounds more natural.

In the case that someone intrduces someone, 他来自中国 is better because it focuses on the country where the guy is from. 他是中国人 kind of focues on the race. If the guy is from Africa, and you say 他是非洲人, it doesnt sound friendly.

If it is just a casual conversation, you can say 他是中国人. It's OK.

Surely not, LOL!

What a useless forum it would be

dāi ㄉㄞˉ

◎ 傻,愚蠢:~子。~气。~里撒(sā)奸(表面痴呆,暗藏奸诈)。

◎ 不灵活,发愣:~板。~滞。~若木鸡(形容因惊恐而发愣)。

◎ 同“待”。

quoted from 汉典

According the dictionary, they are the same in the third sense, namely, to stay.

Got it, thanks. I always read 他来自中国 more along the lines of "he came from China", e.g. it's possible that's he's really Australian but he just finished visiting China and went somewhere else. I guess I've been reading it wrong.

Ok, if it is from Han Dian, then I admit that I had made a mistake. Those who never make mistakes are those who never give opinions.

1. You should use your spoken language more.

你应该多用用你的口语

Unless 你的 is used for emphasis, there's no need to speak it out in Chinese.

A more common and usually more acceptable version is

你要多用口语。

or 你应该多用口语。
