nsauvage Posted May 9, 2010 at 01:29 PM Report Posted May 9, 2010 at 01:29 PM I love Google Pinyin and have been using it for probably 6 months, but I get the impression that it is slowing my computer quite a bit, especially when I use it with Chrome. For example, when I first launch it, it takes about 10 seconds to launch (but can remember what I typed so I can watch my typing coming up slowly afterwards). I would also like to hear if other have other good PinYin editors? I need Simplified and Traditional, with the ability to type 'hjbj' to get '好久不見'. Thanks Quote

889 Posted May 9, 2010 at 02:43 PM Report Posted May 9, 2010 at 02:43 PM Unless you somehow disable the feature, Google Pinyin updates itself in the background -- it's sending stuff back and forth to Google -- and I suppose that could cause slowdowns, especially if you don't have broadband. Quote
chrix Posted May 9, 2010 at 10:21 PM Report Posted May 9, 2010 at 10:21 PM Too bad, after a reinstall I just switched from Sogou to Google because I trusted Google more than Sogou not to install spyware in the future. Does anyone know how to turn off that auto-update feature in Google pinyin? I'm fine with it as long as I have broadband access, but not if I'm at a place with slow internet... Quote
roddy Posted May 9, 2010 at 11:07 PM Report Posted May 9, 2010 at 11:07 PM I think you'd need to be on a pretty slow connection for Google Pinyin's updates to make any difference - it's just text, after all, and even software updates aren't going to be very big. There might be an option to feed word info back to Google so they can add it to their database (and their big big file on you) but again - it's just text. That said, if you're got it to synchronize your data with your account, maybe setting up that connection is slow or something. Try unchecking the options on the 自动同步 pane of settings, see if that helps. Does task manager show anything in particular using a lot of memory when things slow down? Quote
nsauvage Posted May 11, 2010 at 05:15 AM Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 at 05:15 AM I do not think it is a problem with bandwidth, more with CPU usage. But I am starting to suspect the issue to be linked with Chrome too, as sometimes, I cannot use Google Pinyin anymore on Chrome, but I can on other applications. When that happens, I need to restart Chrome. 1 Quote
tooironic Posted May 12, 2010 at 12:03 AM Report Posted May 12, 2010 at 12:03 AM Like skylee, I switched to Sogou a few years ago and much prefer it to Google Pinyin, mostly because you can customise the look of it and magnify the input to a large size (and cooler font) to make it easier on the eyes. I'd recommend it over Google Pinyin any time. Quote
