Baseball

Hey,

So I know baseball is much more popular in Japan (and maybe Korea?) than China, but, I am wondering what our Chinese friends on the boards think of baseball (if anything)?

Also, if anyone goes to or is near a uni with a baseball team, I was wondering if you know how good they are? I am thinking of trying to play again (I quit in college) wherever I end up, but not sure what the competition is like out there.

Snip snip snip - no need to quote the only post.

I know the MLB is making a big push to introduce and popularize Baseball in China. I read one article about an American playing professional baseball in China. He didn't make very much but he got to play for a living.

I played on a baseball team during my time in Beijing, but it was self organized with other students from Japan and Korea. There are some fields in Beijing though, just out of the way.

My bet is you could play.

I don't think baseball is big in China (basketball is played all over the place though), but in Taiwan it's pretty much the national sport big. There are several professional teams, several Taiwanese players play in the US and are very famous & popular. If baseball is an important consideration in your choice of where to study, I'd certainly consider Taiwan.

I would be a bit curious what skill level it would take to play professionally in China. Though, I think I would also want to make sure their rules are the same as rules in the U.S. and I would probably worry that I would be the target of a lot of beam balls. Which may sound like a bit of an ignorant assumption, but, when playing basketball here, I often have the Chinese players hitting me to the point of bruising or shoving me and not having a foul called, all the while, if I block a shot or anything even near disrupting a play, its a foul. Of course, in baseball there are much easier ways to prevent such things happening more than once or twice o:-)

That is good to know about Taiwan though, unfortunately I don't think I will be living in Taiwan while I'm still young enough to play baseball and not softball though :-\.
