kekti Posted May 13, 2010 at 04:36 AM Report Share Posted May 13, 2010 at 04:36 AM ok I can't figure out what this one charater means if anything at all... I got a scroll of calligraphy with what's supposed to be my grandfathers name on it... I've figured out the middle and bottom two character being love and prosperity. I can't for the life of me figure out the top character though...
OneEye Posted May 13, 2010 at 04:48 AM Report Share Posted May 13, 2010 at 04:48 AM It's 畢. It's a surname, but otherwise means end or conclude. It's pronounced bì.

It's pronounced bì. could you tell me what it all means put together, if anything at all... I mean his name was Al Black, it was (this is my assumption) translated phonetically then translated to corisponding characters... and should (If I'm correct, due to a variant of the character Bi.) read Bat ai/oi Lung... and what would that all mean if anything.. skylee Posted May 13, 2010 at 10:49 AM Report Share Posted May 13, 2010 at 10:49 AM should (If I'm correct, due to a variant of the character Bi.) What variant? 畢 (bi) is a Chinese surname and it represents the Surname "Black" because they share the "b" sound. 愛 (ai) means love and represents the "a" sound in the name "Al". 隆 (long) means grand/prosperous and represents the "l" sound in the name "Al". Bat Oi Lung is the Cantonese pronunciation / romanisation of these three characters.

Lu Posted May 22, 2010 at 03:01 PM Report Share Posted May 22, 2010 at 03:01 PM That is not simply a transliteration of 'Al Black', it looks like your grandfather got a real Chinese name from a real Chinese person, who put a little effort into coming up with something nice. Hence 畢 for his surname, Black, and 愛龍 for his first name, if I am correct in thinking that was Alan, Al for short. A nice scroll, the calligraphy looks beautiful too.
