MinorFatality Posted May 16, 2010 at 06:08 PM Report Posted May 16, 2010 at 06:08 PM A friend sent me some text with the line "我正在很忙" in it. I was wondering if its correct to use 正在 with an adjective that way. So far I've only learned it as used in the context of a verb. Thanks! Quote

Mugi Posted May 17, 2010 at 04:05 AM Report Posted May 17, 2010 at 04:05 AM Nothing wrong with this usage. 正在: 副-表示动作、行为在进行中 正在 + vb = action taking place right at the moment; 正在 + adj = emphasizes state of being right at the moment. e.g. 他正在不高兴. Quote
roddy Posted May 17, 2010 at 04:28 AM Report Posted May 17, 2010 at 04:28 AM It does feel wrong to me. If you're using 很 it seems to me whatever follows isn't a verb. But if I look at it long enough I doubt myself. Quote
MinorFatality Posted May 17, 2010 at 04:46 AM Author Report Posted May 17, 2010 at 04:46 AM So if you used an adjective after it, you could use a degree modifier like zhen to emphasize that you're really busy, but do you NEED to use one? Does it change the meaning whether you have hen in it or not? Quote
doraemon Posted May 17, 2010 at 06:33 AM Report Posted May 17, 2010 at 06:33 AM It doesn't sound right to me either. It would be correct if your friend said 我正在忙, but 很 shouldn't be there for this phrase. Quote
Hog_Man Posted May 18, 2010 at 12:57 PM Report Posted May 18, 2010 at 12:57 PM it seems a technically incorrect to me too, but i've seen and heard it a lot. someone once told me it can mean "就是在很忙", although that seems a bit strange too. Quote
creamyhorror Posted May 18, 2010 at 04:29 PM Report Posted May 18, 2010 at 04:29 PM In the case of 我正在不高兴 I perceive "不高兴" to be forced into a verbal form ala "I'm [busy] being unhappy." I guess I haven't seen 正在 used with an adjective much, so it seems weird or wrong to me. Quote
