I'm wondering what would be the closest English equivalent of this 哪知. Some samples below.

Also is it 哪知 or 那知? A book I'm reading using traditional characters uses the latter.

哪知,神以美物充满他们的房屋。但恶人所谋定的离我好远

岂有一件事人能指着说,这是新的。哪知,在我们以前的世代,早已有了。

哪知,三天后的正午,父亲便出现在了炽热的校园门口,肩上还扛着一箱注射用的生理盐水、葡萄糖之类的药剂。

哪知 means "who would have known", "who would have thought".

If you directly translate it, you can kind of see 哪 as "who" and 知 as "knew" = "who knew?/who would have thought?" :V That's how I'd remember it, anyway.
