roddy Posted June 2, 2010 at 08:36 AM Report Posted June 2, 2010 at 08:36 AM By the utterly scientific method of flicking through the forty or so Faye Wong songs I have on my battered old 2nd gen nano until I found one that made me think 'that's definitely the one I like best, I'll never change my mind ever'. Used to listen to it when running or politely shouldering my way through subway rush hours. 将爱 Also on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7W4N7irC-HI (I think, can't check) For something slower, it's hard to beat 我愿意. madmaxxx Posted June 3, 2010 at 06:06 PM Report Posted June 3, 2010 at 06:06 PM 传奇 I know, the original is by someone else, but the cover version gives goose bumps. For me definitely Wang Fei´s best song ever. Quote
roddy Posted June 4, 2010 at 02:54 AM Author Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 02:54 AM Ok, I have a new one, 乘客. It's traditional for me to listen to this, assuming I have it on my ipod at the time, as I travel in from an airport to whatever city I've just landed at. I had a sneaking suspicion as I was writing the first post that I had forgotten something. I think this was it. Quote
tooironic Posted June 4, 2010 at 08:33 AM Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 08:33 AM I'm a huge Wang Fei fan but much prefer her older stuff around 迷人小姐 era. 請你別說 and 女孩 are classic, almost Kate Bush-like. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 4, 2010 at 09:29 AM Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 09:29 AM I was going to suggest 乘客 as one of her very very best. But my favourite is still 闷, here, or live version here. From earlier, 棋子 here is nice too. Quote
gougou Posted June 4, 2010 at 09:49 AM Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 09:49 AM I second 闷. It was one of the first Chinese songs I ever heard, and as such still has a special place. Quote
roddy Posted June 4, 2010 at 10:08 AM Author Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 10:08 AM Oh, 闷 is a nice one. Now I don't know. And look, there's 不留 in the 相关视频. Now I really have no idea, I think 闷 is the better song, but 不留 really does hammer home the 把 construction. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 4, 2010 at 10:32 AM Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 10:32 AM Gougou, same for me -- or at least, it's the first song I heard in karaoke that made me ask who the singer was. There was a different album out at the time though, with a bit of trendy drum & base, very good too. Roddy, 将爱 works for rushing on the subway (definitely: I can remember listening to it on the tube in London), but how about 新房客 (from the album I'm talking about) for the long-distance train station or airport? So when will the "best Chinese pop song to introduce complex grammar" thread be kicking off? Quote
rob07 Posted June 4, 2010 at 10:50 AM Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 10:50 AM I'm no expert, but I really like the ending theme she did for 天龙八部 - 宽恕. 难道爱比恨更难宽恕. Quote
roddy Posted June 4, 2010 at 07:21 PM Author Report Posted June 4, 2010 at 07:21 PM I've found the best one, it's 给自己的情书. Case closed, move along, nothing more to see here . . . Quote
skylee Posted June 5, 2010 at 12:25 AM Report Posted June 5, 2010 at 12:25 AM 我願意 and 給自己的情書 are always in my music player. The other ones that I like a lot are 約定 and 郵差. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 5, 2010 at 07:52 AM Report Posted June 5, 2010 at 07:52 AM 王菲. Almost as good as 窦唯. Quote
Chinadoog Posted June 5, 2010 at 01:41 PM Report Posted June 5, 2010 at 01:41 PM I like Faye Wong. Can anyone recommend some other good Chinese (Mandarin) singers? Quote
skylee Posted June 5, 2010 at 01:44 PM Report Posted June 5, 2010 at 01:44 PM I like Faye Wong. Can anyone recommend some other good Chinese (Mandarin) singers? This thread is about Faye Wong. Take a look at this thread for ideas of good Chinese (Mandarin) singers (though many singers on the thread sings in Cantonese, a very influential dialect). Quote
Chinadoog Posted June 5, 2010 at 02:33 PM Report Posted June 5, 2010 at 02:33 PM Well I'm really looking for singers who are somewhat similar to Faye Wong. That thread is just random songs that people like Quote
Meng Lelan Posted June 6, 2010 at 01:46 PM Report Posted June 6, 2010 at 01:46 PM Wasn't there a DVD album she did called 将爱?I'm trying to find a version that has the music videos so I can read the captions as I watch. I don't know if I could find that when I get to China next month. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 6, 2010 at 01:54 PM Report Posted June 6, 2010 at 01:54 PM The DVD is here but out of stock. Quote
Meng Lelan Posted June 6, 2010 at 01:58 PM Report Posted June 6, 2010 at 01:58 PM Sigh, so it's out of stock. Quote
xiaocai Posted June 6, 2010 at 03:24 PM Report Posted June 6, 2010 at 03:24 PM Here is one of those less popular one 過眼雲煙. I think the song is average, maybe slightly above, among her songs, but suits her voice very well. Quote
roddy Posted June 8, 2010 at 02:30 AM Author Report Posted June 8, 2010 at 02:30 AM I can't imagine it would be too hard to find a Faye Wong DVD with subtitles in China. I'm still liking 给自己的情书 best. Further updates as events warrant. Quote
