Squeeze And Press (夹,挤,压,柞)

夹,挤,推,压 and 柞 can all be translated by the English words "squeeze" or "press." Could someone kindly explain the difference between them?

压 is like "press", like applying pressure from the top with your hands, etc. Also used for atmospheric pressure and the like.

推 is "push", like pushing somebody away

夹 is more like "pinch", squeeze with your fingers in order to grip it

挤 is like squeezing something out of a tube or (more commonly) an environment where you're squeezed by the crowd

I'm not completely sure about the rest. Don't see them often.

i think you mixed up (and so did i at first) 柞 zhà, zuò with 榨, 搾, zhà: a press for extracting juice, oil, etc; to extract (oil, liquid, ...) by pressing (grapes, olives, ...). 壓 is a very general word, 榨 is quite specific: 用壓力榨油 apply pressure to squeeze out the oil.

Also used for grasping food with chopsticks, which I just learned yesterday as in "夹菜之前" -- "before you pickup the food [with chopsticks]".
