deathtrap Posted July 2, 2010 at 09:04 PM Report Share Posted July 2, 2010 at 09:04 PM Just thought I'd let you guys know about the short story Nciku recently published. It's a Mandarin version of Beatrix Potters Tale of Peter Rabbit. I'm going through it right now but even though I've gone through about 120 ChinesePod lessons and the first book of New Practical Chinese Reader I'm still having a hard time with this. It feels like every single word of the story is a new word, and some of the sentence patterns they use make no sense, for example: "夹克上的大纽扣被卡住了", 上 seems unnecessary since 的 indicates the button belongs to the jacket, and 被 seems out of place since I assume it's indicating that because of the button he got stuck. Is there something I'm missing?

Is there something I'm missing? Just because something is "unnecessary", it doesn't mean that it is wrong to include it. Think about how you would say 夹克上的大纽扣 in English. You could say "the jacket's button", but wouldn't it be more natural to say "the button on the jacket"? As for the 被, it is the button that got stuck.
