Ian_Lee Posted September 22, 2004 at 09:29 PM Report Posted September 22, 2004 at 09:29 PM Who is the most deified person in Chinese society? In Mainland China, no doubt that is Chairman Mao. Even taxi drivers hang his button under the windshield as a blessing to avoid accident. But who else is the most deified person in other Chinese communities? No doubt it will be Kuan Gong (Kuan Yu). In HK, Kuan's altar is hanged high on the wall with constant incense burning in police station, triad headquarter, whorehouse, mahjong joint,.....and even many small retail shops. Why is Mr. Kuan so popular? (Actually this topic should also belong to the History Forum) It is because Mr. Kuan has honored the virtue of 義. But why is the virtue of 義 placed higher than other virtures like 忠 (loyalty) and 孝 (filial)? Moreover, how can we explain the concept of 義 to non-Chinese (the dictionary meaning of justice or righteousness is not quite right)? Quote

skylee Posted October 29, 2004 at 11:47 PM Report Posted October 29, 2004 at 11:47 PM Interesting story. BTW, "一哥" in the news report is the nickname of the Commissioner of Police in HK, whose official car number is "1". I used to work in an office where there were a group of people whose work was to deal with explosives. And they held two ceremonies every year to 拜關帝. Quote
