Tsunku Posted October 1, 2003 at 07:36 PM Report Share Posted October 1, 2003 at 07:36 PM Chinese food in America is mostly crap, I usually don't even bother. It's impossible to find any real Yunnan or Sichuan style cooking where I live. I've given up on Chinese food mostly, even when I make it myself, it's just not the same. I feel like I need my meat fresh from the butcher and my veggies straight from the market for it to taste right. So yep, waiting it out till I get back

Over the years, I've learned to accept the "American-styled Chinese food" as a different type of food, rather than trying to pretend that it's Chinese. With that mentality, I seem to start liking it more.

Guest Anonymous Posted October 2, 2003 at 01:14 AM Report Share Posted October 2, 2003 at 01:14 AM I remember having guoqiao mixian for breakfast in Kunming and Lijiang. It's definitely something worth going back to Yunnan for
andreabt Posted October 5, 2003 at 07:49 AM Report Share Posted October 5, 2003 at 07:49 AM Be persistent in seeking out good Chinese food! It can happen. Here in the Indianapolis area, I've found a few restaurants that have at least one or two dishes that I like, and while I used to be appalled at the plethora of "China Buffets" that seem to have sprouted up recently, I've even found a couple of those that I like, though my favorites there tend to be Mongolian barbecue/stir-fry or sushi...not particularly Chinese! We did discover a restaurant in Indy that has fairly typical Chinese food...unfortunately, the staff is rather surly (fairly typical Chinese service? ) When we get absolutely desperate, we go up to Chinatown in Chicago. But my husband being Chinese, I get him to cook for me from time to time, and he's a decent cook, if lacking a broad spectrum of flavors (he tends to make most of his stuff "red-cooked"), and we are also part of a Chinese church fellowship that regularly has pitch-in get-togethers, and that also gets me through when I'm craving fensi or stuffed lotus root! andreabt Posted October 6, 2003 at 07:03 PM Report Share Posted October 6, 2003 at 07:03 PM andreabt, have you been to the tibetan restaurant in bloomington? No, sounds great! I don't get down that way as much as I do up to Indy (I'm on the southside), but do occasionally. Where is it? Is it hard to find? Are you from Indiana, or did you go to IU?
