Simon_CH Posted July 9, 2010 at 12:46 PM Report Posted July 9, 2010 at 12:46 PM Hi I recently purchased my HTC Desire and am already in love with it. Does anyone else have an Android phone of the latest generation and can recommend some useful apps for it ? I do hope all the Google applications will still work when I'm there though. Cheers, Simon Quote
murrayjames Posted July 15, 2010 at 03:23 AM Report Posted July 15, 2010 at 03:23 AM Your applications will work. Access to the Android app store (which means updates) probably won't--you'll need a VPN. Lots of great apps available. I mentioned some of the ones I use for Chinese here: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/26445-android-chinese-apps/page__p__219092#comment-219092 This site has the most comprehensive list of Android apps I've seen: http://www.androlib.com/ Quote
Simon_CH Posted July 15, 2010 at 08:32 AM Author Report Posted July 15, 2010 at 08:32 AM Thanks a lot for the reply, that Chinese app looks nice, do you have any specific ones for China ? Like maps, guides etc. ? Quote
murrayjames Posted July 15, 2010 at 02:27 PM Report Posted July 15, 2010 at 02:27 PM I use Google Maps. Baidu for search, because Google Mobile services have been unreliable (read: throttled) lately. QQ has two apps for Android available. I have them both, and switch to one if the other is down. The Nexus One Clock app has weather information built in. I use that pretty much daily. Advanced Task Killer. How's your Mandarin? As for guide information, I'd imagine the best stuff is in Chinese. Maybe some expat papers have their own apps, I haven't checked. I'm not the most tech-savvy guy, but other people on these forums definitely are. Some are even open-source gurus that write their own apps. Maybe some of them can post here. Quote
murrayjames Posted July 15, 2010 at 02:42 PM Report Posted July 15, 2010 at 02:42 PM I forgot to mention: Aldiko, a free e-book reader. Has a great interface and it's easy to use. Try reading Nietzsche in a crowded Chinese train terminal. Or Charles Dickens at the 派出所. It might just blow your mind  Quote
Simon_CH Posted July 16, 2010 at 08:01 AM Author Report Posted July 16, 2010 at 08:01 AM Cheers, will give them a try! I really wish they'd adopt the SmartShanghai app to Android. Quote
New Members petri71 Posted September 17, 2010 at 04:30 AM New Members Report Posted September 17, 2010 at 04:30 AM Hello I am thinking of changing phones from Nokia to HTC or SE Android, I was wondering if Android in China is also censored like the Nokia is, in terms of application allowing to publish online, FM transmiters, etc... I have always used European Nokia phones in China so I did not have too many restrictions... How does this work with Android ? thank you in advance for your answers Quote
