Ren_st Posted July 12, 2010 at 09:29 PM Report Posted July 12, 2010 at 09:29 PM I want to go to Guangzhou for 2-3 days, possibly over a weekend, and want to know whether it is worth it to take the train instead of plane. I looked at some websites and it seems like there are no direct Shanghai-Guangzhou trains. Is this true? If so, what would the best train route in order to get to Guangzhou? Thanks! Quote

889 Posted July 13, 2010 at 01:31 PM Report Posted July 13, 2010 at 01:31 PM Technically, it's true there aren't any trains between Shanghai Station and Guangzhou Station; these cities have several different stations and the trains that run between Shanghai and Guangzhou use different pairs of stations. Most online schedules, though, will automatically search for all stations within a given city. This site has a good search engine: http://www.12306.cn The D/G train combo is a clever idea, but only one D train from Shanghai stops at new Wuhan Station, the starting point for the G train to Guangzhou. Otherwise, you have to make a cumbersome transit between stations in Wuhan. The D3002 leaves Shanghai Hongqiao Station at 06:48, arriving Wuhan Station at 12:23. You can then catch the G1063, leaving Wuhan Station at 12:49, arriving Guangzhou Nan at 16:37, for a 10-hour journey, It's a bit expensive at 273RMB for the D train and 490RMB for the G (both 2nd class).
