How to say chair & blanket .....

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm teaching my kid Mandarin and some words just baffle me. In this case, it's the word chair. When I was taught Mandarin, I was taught to say "yi zi". However, being around native speakers, I hear the term "deng zi" more. I am more of a Cantonese speaker and we tend to use the term "deng zi" more. So, I was wondering if this is more of a written vs spoken vocabulary thing.

Also, the same goes for the word blanket. Which is more prevalent in Mandarin Chinese, bei zi or tan zi?

Thanks.

1. "yi zi" and "deng zi" means the same thing commonly. some places name it "yi zi", and others places call it "deng zi".

2. Bei zi: 被子,quilt;

tan zi: 毯子,blanket.

yizi for chair, dengzi for stool, beizi

If you plan to enroll your child in Mandarin class when he is 3 or 4, he will understand the Mandarin teacher no matter how you prefer to say. Cantonese kids learn Mandarin very easily.

i think dengzi is different from yizi, dengzi is low and usually without handrails, yizi is the common one that is used in offices and libraries.

You've also got 棉被 miánbèi comforter / quilt.. just to add to the list.. that's a common problem- you'll find many words meaning the same thing, depending on where they're saying it!

blanket and quilt, "毯子 tan zi" and "被子 bei zi" are different things. you should search them in google and watch the picture for them.

"凳子 deng zi" sometimes means a low and small chair like this jiaju2_0087.jpg
