xiaoxiaocao Posted July 26, 2010 at 05:53 AM Report Posted July 26, 2010 at 05:53 AM Hey all, Just wondering if anyone knows where I can buy or order James Heisig's Remembering the characters book from within China. If preferable I would like to order it from a bookstore within China but can't seem to find it on any site apart from Amazon USA. I presume there must also be a book store in Beijing that sells it? If anyone could advise it would be much appreciated! Quote
rcloud19 Posted July 26, 2010 at 06:18 AM Report Posted July 26, 2010 at 06:18 AM I wish you luck trying to find it. I searched all over the city trying to get it and tried to get stores to order it to no avail. I ended up buying it on Amazon and having it shipped to China. The shipping ended up costing more than the book as I got it priority so the shipping was $35, but I received it in 3 days. If you are willing to wait up to a month you can get it shipped for $10. GeoffC Posted July 26, 2010 at 06:27 AM Report Posted July 26, 2010 at 06:27 AM You can get it cheaper from Book Depositary (USA) http://www.bookdepository.com/book/9780824833244/Remembering-Traditional-Hanzi-How-Not-to-Forget-the-Meaning-and-Writing-of-Chinese-Characters-Bk.-1?utm_campaign=usbooko&utm_medium=api&utm_source=AU&utm_content=Remembering-Traditional-Hanzi-How-Not-to-For Quote

Wouldn't one of the large bookstores in 王府井 have it? Quote
rcloud19 Posted July 26, 2010 at 02:45 PM Report Posted July 26, 2010 at 02:45 PM I wasn't able to find it anywhere there. The Foreign Language Bookstore had nothing even remotely similar, but I was able to find Matthews's Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters at the 王府井书店 in their section of Chinese learning materials. The book is similar, but only covers 800 characters. Although, this was a year ago so you may have better luck now. Quote
knadolny Posted July 27, 2010 at 09:45 AM Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 09:45 AM Why don't you try stopping by Bookworm in Sanlitun (right?). If they don't stock it, maybe they will order it for you and start stocking it for others as well. I have only heard great things about Bookworm, but the store opened shortly after I left Beijing so I have never actually been. Bookworm Beijing Quote
roddy Posted July 27, 2010 at 10:42 AM Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 10:42 AM Even if there's anywhere in Beijing selling it (quite possibly, but I don't know) I think it'd be more hassle to order from them then overseas. Even if the postage is cheaper, you'll be paying the usual mark up on foreign books. What you could do is see if there's anyone in the US who will order it and ship it to you at a cost, in exchange for you doing the same with a some locally-available stuff. Quote
rcloud19 Posted July 27, 2010 at 04:02 PM Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 04:02 PM I actually tried to get the Bookworm to order the book, but they said they weren't able to order it... Again, this was a year ago, so maybe things have changed. Quote
xiaoxiaocao Posted July 27, 2010 at 11:38 PM Author Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 11:38 PM Thanks for all the input. I've got a friend bringing it over from the states when he arrives in a couple of weeks. If anyone does see it around somewhere please don't hesitate to let the forum know! Quote
New Members xiaoju Posted November 26, 2015 at 08:13 AM New Members Report Posted November 26, 2015 at 08:13 AM OK this is an old topic, but still current, and I couldn't find the answer anywhere on the internet. So here it goes: In october 2015, I ordered Heisig 'Remembering simplified Hanzi 1 & 2' from Amazon Japan (!), delivery to Beijing is about 100 RMB only, got it after about 2-3 weeks I think. Ordering from Amazon USA would have been much more expensive. The Amazon Japan website has an english version. Prices of course are in Japanese Yuan. Later I saw that the chinese website douban ( www.douban.com ) also got them. I guess it's cheaper and faster, but I didn't try it. None of the bookstores I checked in Beijing ( 'The bookworm) and (Page One') were able to order it for me. Hope this helps! Quote
