New Members lorlethomp Posted July 26, 2010 at 01:58 PM New Members Report Posted July 26, 2010 at 01:58 PM I've been considering getting Wu Wei as a tattoo lately. I was doing some research online, and I found a version that I really like, but I'm not quite sure if it is actually Wu Wei. Is this symbol really Wu Wei? If it isn't, what does it mean? Quote
jbradfor Posted July 27, 2010 at 01:45 PM Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 01:45 PM It's in seal script, which I can not begin to read, but I'm pretty sure the seal shown contains four characters. If by "wu wei" you mean 無爲, that's two characters. So no, that doesn't say wu wei. It might say wu wei plus something else? [i'm guessing the first character (upper left) is 道, and the last character (lower right) is 然.] Anyone else? Quote
skylee Posted July 27, 2010 at 02:08 PM Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 02:08 PM It's 道法自然, from Laozi. [PS - for the meaning, you could take a look at the last part, specifically the last sentence, of chapter 25 of this translation of the Dao De Jing.] Wu Wei could also be 無畏 (no fear) or 無味 (no taste). And here is a tool where you can check how a character is written in different scripts. 1 Quote
renzhe Posted July 27, 2010 at 02:29 PM Report Posted July 27, 2010 at 02:29 PM Wuwei should refer to the Taoist concept: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_wei Quote
