pazu Posted September 29, 2004 at 04:12 AM Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 04:12 AM I think it's quite difficult to generalize American because it's not a very unified society... while I would say many people are against the war in Iraq, some wholeheartedly support it... Quote
HashiriKata Posted September 29, 2004 at 09:35 AM Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 09:35 AM By asking questions of these types, what do we want? -to reinforce some kinds of steriotype images? -to be flattered? -to start a fight? -because we're not sure of ourselves? -to give people a chance to vent their feelings? -to form a league between "us and them"? -because we've got too much time in our hands? -or only because we want to practise "freedom of speech"? Well, whatever it is, please blame the traffic jam on my way to work this morning! Quote
krinkle Posted September 29, 2004 at 03:38 PM Author Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 03:38 PM By asking questions of these types, what do we want? just was wondering since i hope to go there some day and i am an american-no other motives. Quote
wiz_oz Posted September 29, 2004 at 05:57 PM Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 05:57 PM Hi, Krinkle ...More direct than the Brits but less so than the Aussies ...More fun than the Brits but less so than the Aussies (can substitute crazy for fun) Just compare the major english speaking countries. BTW I am Asian and have worked with all 3 above. Otherwise comes in much the same way, there are good and bad and all shades in between Quote
wushijiao Posted September 29, 2004 at 10:11 PM Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 10:11 PM By asking questions of these types, what do we want? Well, it's never good to reinforce stereotypes. But it's always a good idea to know a country's stereotypes and rationale behind the sterotypes before you go there. Quote
HashiriKata Posted September 30, 2004 at 09:29 AM Report Posted September 30, 2004 at 09:29 AM Hi krinkle, I hope you didn't take my earlier reply too negatively. It's just that in my personal experience questions similar to your have often led to to unpleasant consequences. Anyway, you may feel re-assured to know that Chinese people receive Americans (also most Western people) very well , provided that they don't assume that they have the mission in China to teach Chinese people how to behave, how to think and how to do things (I hope you get what I mean). As with some other poster here, I think your best bet is just go there and enjoy the experience, whatever it may be (rather than let it coloured by "pre-received" advice from others, as theirs may be very different from yours.) yonglan Posted September 30, 2004 at 02:01 PM Report Posted September 30, 2004 at 02:01 PM I will at least say that if you speak the local language you'll get a _very_ different picture than if you speak only English. Quote
