Meanings of two words

tomato can be called 蕃茄,fan1 qie2; or 西红柿 xi1, hong2, shi4;or 柿子 shi4 zi

sweep can be called 笤帚tiao2 zhou,扫帚 sao4 zhou,扫把 sao3 ba1, or

A personal guess, origionally, it was 番 because 番 means foreign in Chinese, tomato was from outside of China. 番茄 may mean foreign fruit。

But, later, Chinese also has a character 蕃 which related to plant, sure, we can use it for 蕃茄,which looks for suitable.
