xuechengfeng Posted September 29, 2004 at 03:39 PM Author Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 03:39 PM Oh of course I want you to help Skylee, along with Quest, but I feel that I post the questions for corrections and help all the time and it seems to be that you two are the only ones who do it a lot, so I feel that I am troubling you. xuechengfeng Posted September 29, 2004 at 03:47 PM Author Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 03:47 PM Are these translation or composition? Thanks for your help. I suppose the ones I posted here aren't necessarily compositions, but more of summaries of readings which are in John DeFrancis Beginning Chinese book. And believe me, it's not the easiest task summarizing this crap because they are pretty much all over the place in their dialogues, lol. And thanks, roddy. Quote
madizi Posted September 29, 2004 at 07:00 PM Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 07:00 PM Ahhhh..... DeFrancis...... it remembers me of my first two years at chair of sinology. We had two Chinese classes: one for Simplified characters and one for Traditional characters. At the latter class we used DeFrancis' book. It was already at that time (1996) out-of-date, but it was still good for learning Traditional characters. The grammar explanation is also good, though some things are out-of-date. Ah, memories....... sorry for that.... Anyways, 夥計 isn't used anymore. Some people, who were recently in China, even said that 小姐 for waitress also isn't used anymore. What do Chinese use then for waiter and waitress? Quote
roddy Posted September 29, 2004 at 11:17 PM Report Posted September 29, 2004 at 11:17 PM Things I hear in Beijing for waiter / waitress are 服务员(m/f), 小姐(f), 先生(m) and now and then 小伙子(m). One particularly unpleasant woman I had dinner with once insisted on calling the waitress 姑娘 but everyone cringed when she did it - not sure if it was the inappropriateness of the term, or her hideous voice I think 小姐 gets a bad rep among foreign speakers in China, as there's a perception it's another word for prostitute - I'm not sure if this is true anywhere, but in the north-east I've heard it used often enough without anyone getting slapped. As far as I can see it just means 'young woman' and therefore it might be used to refer to a prostitute (like when you get a late night phone call in your hotel) but that doesn't mean you're insulting anyone when you call them 小姐. Unless it's a man. That would be bad. Roddy Quote

heianderen Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:41 PM Report Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:41 PM I had a chinese friend here in Spain that regarded me as his best friend, he is a really kind person, but he is not longer alowed to have contact with me. His son and his 儿子的妻子 live in 北京. 两年之前我到中国去旅游, 当我在北京的时候他们都对我很客气,一直请我吃饭。他们叫waiter 用的单词就是 小姐或者服务员。 Quote
