feihong Posted January 6, 2011 at 05:21 AM Author Report Posted January 6, 2011 at 05:21 AM OK, so we have two comic reading projects that were started within 5 days of each other. Which is weird, but probably not a huge deal. My plan right now is to leave things as they are and post the next comic reading project in March, giving us all of January and February to read Animal Sense and The Ravages of Time. An alternative is to just shelve Animal Sense for now and repost it later. I notice it hasn't gotten much response, but I don't know if it's lack of interest or if people are just busy getting back into their normal schedules after the holidays. Quote
roddy Posted January 6, 2011 at 05:58 AM Report Posted January 6, 2011 at 05:58 AM Holiday period is always a bit quieter - might be worth giving it a bump now. Quote
Chinadoog Posted January 6, 2011 at 07:10 AM Report Posted January 6, 2011 at 07:10 AM My problem is that both of those comics only use traditional characters. Quote
feihong Posted January 6, 2011 at 05:59 PM Author Report Posted January 6, 2011 at 05:59 PM Yeah, that plan doesn't seem entirely fair to the people who want to read a simplified comic in February... Quote
jbradfor Posted January 6, 2011 at 07:11 PM Report Posted January 6, 2011 at 07:11 PM I'll go with whatever people pick, and read what my time allows..... Quote
Gleaves Posted January 6, 2011 at 08:23 PM Report Posted January 6, 2011 at 08:23 PM Sounds good, either way. I only looked at the first few pages of Animal Sense, but I think I will dig it. I look forward to trying out 火凤燎原, too. Quote
feihong Posted January 7, 2011 at 11:25 AM Author Report Posted January 7, 2011 at 11:25 AM I'll post another simplified reading project in February, as planned. Whether I post a traditional reading project in March will depend on where everyone's at. Quote
jbradfor Posted January 18, 2011 at 07:58 PM Report Posted January 18, 2011 at 07:58 PM Anyone else having issues with dm5.com? Sometime firefox just tells me that its DNS name can not resolve. And then, a couple hours later, I click reload and it works. Haven't had this problem with any other website. Quote
feihong Posted January 19, 2011 at 12:34 AM Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 at 12:34 AM The site was recently down for maintenance for at least five days. They might still be resolving some issues, but as of yesterday I wasn't noticing any more problems. Quote
feihong Posted February 2, 2011 at 04:48 AM Author Report Posted February 2, 2011 at 04:48 AM So, it's February, and I'm supposed to post another simplified reading project. Is anyone interested, or are we still catching up with previous reading projects? In any case, I went ahead and uploaded the CBZ files for 走错的房间, if anyone wants to give it a shot. Quote
jbradfor Posted February 2, 2011 at 08:35 PM Report Posted February 2, 2011 at 08:35 PM I'm in. It has been a bit quiet. For me, I didn't get much reading done in January due to catching up on all the stuff I said I finished in 2010 but didn't actually finish..... It's really mostly done now. I mean it this time. Gleaves Posted February 2, 2011 at 09:26 PM Report Posted February 2, 2011 at 09:26 PM I've been reading Ravages of Time a bit the past few days (and still have to finish off volume 1 of Animal Sense), but I'd still be game for something new. Quote
feihong Posted February 14, 2011 at 10:43 PM Author Report Posted February 14, 2011 at 10:43 PM I'm taking a break for the month of March. There have already been 3 reading projects this year, so even for me there is a lot of reading to catch up on. However, this doesn't mean someone other than me cannot post a reading project. Lately I've been going through DM5's archive and making a list of legible comics. The vast majority of hosted Chinese comics have terrible scan quality, so this list can save you quite a bit of time if you're looking for a comic to read. Also, I include additional information like what character set a particular comic is printed in, as well as the (approximate) genre. I haven't finished compiling the list yet, but you can see the unfinished version here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0Ao2aBk5qbR3udEFtMWpIaUJwVUhmY3B2SThndFZTclE&hl=en&output=html 1 Quote
thechamp Posted March 2, 2011 at 09:47 AM Report Posted March 2, 2011 at 09:47 AM Hi, Great thread I'm glad people are discussing good comics to study. Where is a good place to buy simplified comics in Beijing? I don't really like staring at a computer screen for hours! Can anyone recommend any more contemporary stuff being published? Thanks Quote
feihong Posted March 3, 2011 at 04:05 AM Author Report Posted March 3, 2011 at 04:05 AM By "contemporary stuff", do you mean titles that are currently being published? Or just comics that are not old? It's hard to recommend something when I don't know anything about your reading level or tastes. Quote
jbradfor Posted March 4, 2011 at 02:12 AM Report Posted March 4, 2011 at 02:12 AM I've been using ComicRack to read some of these, based on recommendations here, in particular that it "understands" scanned comics. However, I haven't found good support for the 2-pages-per-scan comics. I normally need to zoom in to see about half a page (1/4 of the scan). However, when I do that, I haven't found a good way to navigate. I would like to be able to press PgDn and it goes from the upper-right to lower-right to upper-left to lower-left to the upper-right of the next scan. But I can find that feature, and instead need to use the mouse, which is slower. Am I missing something obvious? Quote
DespikableMi Posted April 3, 2011 at 01:13 PM Report Posted April 3, 2011 at 01:13 PM @feihong do you happen to have a website? Anyway, I love comics and they are just amazing... ;) Quote
jbradfor Posted April 4, 2011 at 05:18 PM Report Posted April 4, 2011 at 05:18 PM A website for what? Each month we start a new comic in a new thread. The individual threads have links to how to view. Quote
feihong Posted April 4, 2011 at 07:29 PM Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 at 07:29 PM We also have a website that hosts the word lists and comic profiles. Quote
feihong Posted May 3, 2011 at 05:01 PM Author Report Posted May 3, 2011 at 05:01 PM Kinda busy at the moment, but I have already posted the CBZ file for the next Grand Comic Book selection, Love Sketchbook. I'll probably have time to make a new topic for it on Wednesday. Quote
