skybluesk Posted August 16, 2010 at 03:11 AM Author Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 03:11 AM Thank you so much! Yes, these are real names I got off a name translation site, but it would only give me the chracters as pictures, but I need them as text. Apologies, I should have put the meanings in - are these the same meanings you have given me? 1)Wang Rui (sharp) Bao (treasure, jewel, precious, rare) 王瑞寶 2)Wang Hui (bright, intelligence) Ning (serenity, peace)王惠寧 3)Wang Hui Yue (Pleased, joy) 王惠悅 4)Wang Zhi (wsidom, knowledge, intelligence) Ning 王芝寧 Thanks so much! doraemon Posted August 16, 2010 at 03:29 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 03:29 AM I've always thought that the 'hui' for 'wisdom' should be 慧 not 惠?
Hofmann Posted August 16, 2010 at 04:12 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 04:12 AM Rui is probably 銳. Hui is probably 慧. Zhi is probably 智.

rivercao Posted August 16, 2010 at 05:14 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 05:14 AM zhi could be 志 or 之 as well, so if you can upload the pictures, I would soon figure out what these characters are.
skybluesk Posted August 16, 2010 at 06:30 AM Author Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 06:30 AM Oh! Sorry, I didn't know I could add pictures (sorry about that!0! But the characters you guys have given me look exactly the same as the ones in my pictures, so you guys have been a big help! Thanks SO much! But just for interests sakes -whats the difference between 汪 and 王 in a name? Do they mean something different?
renzhe Posted August 16, 2010 at 08:37 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 08:37 AM They are different surnames. They are pronounced differently (different tone) and mean different things: http://www.nciku.com/search/zh/detail/汪/1315730 http://www.nciku.com/search/zh/detail/王/1315737 When used as a surname, though, both of them are simply surnames. Like Smith does not mean that somebody is a smith, etc. It's surname Wāng and surname Wáng.
skybluesk Posted August 16, 2010 at 08:53 AM Author Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 08:53 AM OK, great, thanks! Those names I mentioned above are all surnames - people from the same family. So I guess I could choose either character. Thanks again! You have all been such a great help!
doraemon Posted August 16, 2010 at 10:26 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 10:26 AM Oh yeah, can't 'rui' also be either 睿 or 蕊? There are lots of girls with one of these two words in their names.
SiMaKe Posted August 16, 2010 at 01:54 PM Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 01:54 PM @skybluesk1)Wang Rui (sharp) Bao (treasure, jewel, precious, rare) 王瑞寶 2)Wang Hui (bright, intelligence) Ning (serenity, peace)王惠寧 3)Wang Hui Yue (Pleased, joy) 王惠悅 4)Wang Zhi (wsidom, knowledge, intelligence) Ning 王芝寧 I need to clarify a bit. With the additional information you provided, other character choices are more likely. For example, now that you gave "sharp" for "rui", the more likely character is 銳 as Hofmann points out. The character I provided, 瑞, means auspicious. For Hui, 慧 is probably the character you are looking for as 惠 means kindness, blessing. Similarly 智 is wisdom while 芝 can be used to suggest royalty. As I said, what I provided are, in fact, names of real people. Apparently just not the names of "your" real people. As you can see, the particular characters used can be different and will mean different things even though they have the same pinyin representation (pronunciation). Since these are "complicated" characters (lots of little strokes) and thus difficult to see, once you post the pictures hopefully we'll be able to confirm the choices. skybluesk Posted August 16, 2010 at 03:10 PM Author Report Share Posted August 16, 2010 at 03:10 PM Hi, thank you so much for clarifying!! Yes, you are absolutely right with the characters that you have suggested. I enlarged the text and I enlarged my pics and they are exactly the same. Thank you so much again for all the trouble! I really appreciate it!
OneEye Posted August 24, 2010 at 02:10 PM Report Share Posted August 24, 2010 at 02:10 PM OK, great, thanks! Those names I mentioned above are all surnames - people from the same family. So I guess I could choose either character. Thanks again! You have all been such a great help! No, you can't. They are different names, and pronounced differently. Unless this is a fictional family you've made up, you can't just pick either character, any more than I could say that the last president of the US was George W. Busshe. It just doesn't work that way.
skybluesk Posted August 24, 2010 at 02:47 PM Author Report Share Posted August 24, 2010 at 02:47 PM Sorry, I wasn't clear - these are fictional names for real people. Thanks again everyone!
