roddy Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:42 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:42 PM Geocities has been blocked in China as long as I can remember, but I'm currently getting geocities no problem from Beijing. Anyone else? Roddy
Green Pea Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:46 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:46 PM Very cool. No problem here. I'm in Guangdong at the moment.
roddy Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:51 PM Author Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 03:51 PM Hmmm, interesting, but not particular significant, I think. Even political dissidents can afford decent webhosting these days - don't think this really opens much up to China besides pictures of cats and pages about high-school bands, but hey, it's all a step in the right direction. I've tried primezero.com, which is geek_frappa's site, hosted by Yahoo - that's still unavailable. Roddy PS If you're listening, geek_frappa, I'd swop ALL of geocities, just for your site
yonglan Posted September 30, 2004 at 04:01 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 04:01 PM Ahem, what about Tripod?
roddy Posted September 30, 2004 at 04:05 PM Author Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 04:05 PM The operation timed out when trying to contact gregbosco.tripod.com Bad luck. This is as likely to be a glitch somewhere as anything else. I won't be suprised if we get up tomorrow morning and it's gone again. Roddy PS Actually, i'll be suprised if I get up tomorrow morning full stop, as I'm on holiday. But you know what I mean.

First time in Vietnam... PS: BUt it may because I'm not really in an internet cafe... I'm using my hotel's free internet service.

liuzhou Posted September 30, 2004 at 08:18 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 08:18 PM Geocities also now available from Guangxi. Even more strange is that, despite initiating a massive campaign against pornography on the internet, they have simultaneously unblocked the Playboy site! (Don't ask me how I know that!) madizi Posted September 30, 2004 at 08:27 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2004 at 08:27 PM How you know that?
roddy Posted October 1, 2004 at 01:15 AM Author Report Share Posted October 1, 2004 at 01:15 AM Playboy has apparently been unblocked for a while. I was wrong on two counts - Geocities is still unblocked, and I did get up this morning. Roddy
chengdude Posted October 3, 2004 at 07:50 AM Report Share Posted October 3, 2004 at 07:50 AM No luck in Chengdu, but then again I'm behind a university's firewall where we celebrated National Day by shutting off the Internet for 48 hours. liuzhou Posted October 3, 2004 at 09:19 AM Report Share Posted October 3, 2004 at 09:19 AM Yeah! Lost it down here in Guangxi too. But thanks for the info! I was able to get to a couple of things I wanted while it lasted.
PollyWaffle Posted October 3, 2004 at 09:44 AM Report Share Posted October 3, 2004 at 09:44 AM au.geocities.com is still blocked though it wasn't 6 months ago... is there a point to blocking this stuff when 'i've heard' most porn is still available, plus i access foreign news sites everyday
liuzhou Posted March 22, 2006 at 05:27 AM Report Share Posted March 22, 2006 at 05:27 AM Yesterday, I was googling around, clicked on a link, noticed it was a geocities site and was just about to hit the 'back' button, when to my astonishment the site popped up. It is still open here in Guangxi. I'm told it's still unavailable in Beijing.
JackP Posted October 30, 2006 at 07:28 AM Report Share Posted October 30, 2006 at 07:28 AM Geocities seems to be unblocked (again?) in Shijiazhuang... for now...
md1101 Posted October 30, 2006 at 08:06 AM Report Share Posted October 30, 2006 at 08:06 AM all this recent unblocking really shows is that china's filtering technology is becoming more sophisticated and as a result no longer need to ban entire domain names but simply the content within that domain that they don't like. so its good and bad news really. we celebrated National Day by shutting off the Internet for 48 hours. i actually like to hear stuff like that because the more blatantly obvious it is to the chinese that they are being 'shielded' from the outside and prevented from discussion then the more the chinese are going to go searching for it.
