Kenny同志 Posted August 22, 2010 at 11:33 AM Report Posted August 22, 2010 at 11:33 AM Here’s the context: A girl went into a restroom; when she got out, she was cornered by three gangsters and forced to give them her money; seeing her male friend who was about ten meters away petrified like a log, she followed. But she couldn’t suppress her anger with his behavior; right after the gangsters went off, she shouted to him, “你是不是男人”? I’d like to know, in such a context, what people would usually say to express the same anger. 谢谢同志们! Quote
skylee Posted August 22, 2010 at 11:42 AM Report Posted August 22, 2010 at 11:42 AM Consider "And you call yourself a man?' Quote
SiMaKe Posted August 22, 2010 at 02:41 PM Report Posted August 22, 2010 at 02:41 PM "I thought you were a man!" (in a sarcastic tone). But I think skylee's is spot on (and better). Quote

anonymoose Posted August 22, 2010 at 07:22 PM Report Posted August 22, 2010 at 07:22 PM skylee's is good. You could also say: What kind of a man are you? Are you a man or a mouse? Or if it doesn't necessarily have to be a question, then you could also say: You big girl! Grow a set! You big wuss! Or for extra effect, you could even combine them: Call yourself a man? Grow a set, you big wuss! Quote
semantic nuance Posted August 23, 2010 at 12:21 AM Report Posted August 23, 2010 at 12:21 AM Kind of offensive, but does 'have you got the balls?" mean the same thing as 'Get a set."? Quote
anonymoose Posted August 23, 2010 at 01:23 AM Report Posted August 23, 2010 at 01:23 AM does 'have you got the balls?" mean the same thing as 'Get a set."? Yes and no. They both refer to the same thing, but the former sounds incomplete in isolation. I don't think it would be suitable as a comment in the original situation that kenny asked about. To me, it sounds more like a dare. The latter is more of a comment and would fit the situation that kenny described. Quote
doraemon Posted August 23, 2010 at 06:43 AM Report Posted August 23, 2010 at 06:43 AM You can also just simply say "Man up!" Quote

jbradfor Posted August 23, 2010 at 07:18 PM Report Posted August 23, 2010 at 07:18 PM In my mind, most of the above would be said more teasingly or insultingly, not in anger. In this case, I would expect her to be extremely angry (and scared), and so the only thing she would say is along the lines of "What the $%(*# is wrong with you? Are you a man?" Quote
Kenny同志 Posted August 24, 2010 at 02:19 AM Author Report Posted August 24, 2010 at 02:19 AM I initially used "frustration", but it was replaced by "anger" which I thought was more precise after a second thought. Thank you very much for sharing your view with us. Quote
tooironic Posted August 24, 2010 at 08:28 AM Report Posted August 24, 2010 at 08:28 AM In Australia you might hear: "Gutless wonder!" Quote
