Xiwang Posted August 22, 2010 at 05:46 PM Report Posted August 22, 2010 at 05:46 PM Yesterday's Los Angeles Times had an article about those adorable men who roll up their shirts during the hot summer months in order to cool off by exposing their bellies. The article said that these guys are called "bang ye." However, my image search for 膀爷 on Google seems to indicate that bangye refers to men who go entirely topless in public and not to those who merely roll up their garments. Is the LA Times wrong? Or is bangye an all-encompassing term that includes any type of offensive public male upper body exposure? http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-china-bellies-20100821,0,4939438.story Quote
SiMaKe Posted August 22, 2010 at 06:45 PM Report Posted August 22, 2010 at 06:45 PM Given the context, and this excerpt: "But male belly-baring has proved a tough habit to beat. Years ago, men often did the full Monty with their shirts, taking them off completely, as a way to beat the heat,.." and this But as on the catwalks of Paris, style evolves. In Beijing, it soon morphed into the rolled-up-shirt look. Some go even further to beat the heat, rolling up their pants legs. my guess would be that the term still applies even to the "rolled up" version as well as the shirtless (full Monty) version. Quote
噴嚏疋 Posted August 27, 2010 at 07:00 AM Report Posted August 27, 2010 at 07:00 AM Adorable indeed. In a few more years, that man could look like the lovable, lucky 彌勒佛. Quote
liuzhou Posted August 27, 2010 at 07:45 AM Report Posted August 27, 2010 at 07:45 AM A bit of testicle scratching is, of course, the perfect accompaniment. Quote
