Kenny同志 Posted September 10, 2010 at 08:00 AM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 08:00 AM 不以结婚为目的的谈恋爱都是耍流氓! It is 耍流氓 to enter a relationship without the intention to marry him or her. 请教同志们 How would you say 耍流氓 in English? Hooliganism isn't appropriate here it seems. Quote
wushijiao Posted September 10, 2010 at 10:10 AM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 10:10 AM Did Mao - a serial womanizer- actually say this? Quote
Kenny同志 Posted September 10, 2010 at 10:15 AM Author Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 10:15 AM I don't know whether he was a womanizer or not, but he did say this. PS: As I know very little about his personal life, I will not comment on his personalities before I know enough about him. Quote
Don_Horhe Posted September 10, 2010 at 11:07 AM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 11:07 AM I guess in this particular case 耍流氓 could be roughly translated as lechery, debauchery or decadence. Quote
roddy Posted September 10, 2010 at 01:07 PM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 01:07 PM I don't know whether he was a womanizer or not, but he did say this. Yes you do, Wushijiao just told you I think I might just go for irresponsible. I wanted to go for licentious, but I wasn't sure how to spell it. Quote
CrisPal Posted September 10, 2010 at 02:05 PM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 02:05 PM Really?!Are you sure ChairmanMao ever said that? Quote
Outofin Posted September 10, 2010 at 02:36 PM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 02:36 PM I didn't find any authentic reference but from Baidu Zhidao, it sounds more like a urban legend. “不以结婚为目的的谈恋爱,都是耍流氓”。网上查了一下,有人说这句话出自毛主席语录38章5节27句,但是毛主席语录只有33章啊,所以这个说法说假的。 又有人说,出自莎士比亚,但是,具体是莎士比亚的哪一本书咧? Quote
jbradfor Posted September 10, 2010 at 02:50 PM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 02:50 PM How about "rogue"? There's a word we don't use often enough.... Quote
gato Posted September 10, 2010 at 04:36 PM Report Posted September 10, 2010 at 04:36 PM Quote
Kenny同志 Posted September 11, 2010 at 02:24 AM Author Report Posted September 11, 2010 at 02:24 AM Thank you everybody. The words you suggested make sense in some way. But it’s very hard to tell whether Mao meant taking liberties with women or merely its being immoral by saying 耍流氓. Personally, I don’t think dating someone necessitates sex. Your responses lead me to another possible option, “immoral”. How do you think of it? @Gato You’re really an expert on China. I am amazed by the vastness of your knowledge about her. Thank you all again. Quote
anonymoose Posted September 11, 2010 at 02:37 AM Report Posted September 11, 2010 at 02:37 AM behave like a hoodlum, according to nciku. Quote
The guy from Beijing Posted September 18, 2010 at 07:41 AM Report Posted September 18, 2010 at 07:41 AM well, immoral is right in some way. But hoodlums and “流氓” isn't exactly the same thing, the former means someone in the illegal gang business, while the latter simply means someone who enjoys harassing girls, be it with words or actions. And let me make it clear that it does not imply sex, merely intimacy. Maybe the word womanizer isn't all that bad Quote
JessieJessie Posted September 26, 2010 at 01:56 AM Report Posted September 26, 2010 at 01:56 AM The word "耍流氓"was used when men flirting with women was considered rude and offensive. lechery should be the right word. I guess nowadays girls don't used this word much. Quote
