I have been searching quite a bit and have yet to uncover a concrete response.

I want to attend university in China for the purpose of learning Chinese-Mandarin. Must I take the HSK prior to enrollment?

This seems counterintuitive as I know nothing of the language, but the schools I am interested in indicate the HSK is needed. Any guidance or experience would be most appreciated!

There are some schools that do not have beginner classes and require you to take the HSK before you enrol. You should not go to those schools.

To be honest I think you are probably misunderstanding the schools' requirements. There are very few that want an HSK before they teach you anything.

No, at least not at a university where there are beginner classes. Take BLCU, for example.

Thanks for the information. I have been looking at XISU and XJTU in Xi'an. I viewed the respective websites and found conflicting information, sent emails (no responses) and have been trying find an answer for some time.
